Wait, is MCDB an actual major? I though it was only a department. I'd like to major in it..maybe, but the only 2 major I saw were Molecular Biophyics and Biochemistry (MB&B) and then the regular Bio major and some ecology stuff. I don't want to Biophysics, but I'd love to do straight molecular...(drools) i looove molecular after working at NIH :)

applied for pure mathematics and economics.
I love chemistry and physics! Did research over the summer on black holes, it was awesome and i learned a lot about quantum mechanics.

akv12: that's so cool!!!! I live in CT too, and I've wanted to intern in the Yale hospital for this school year in the yale's otolarynology lab..but it's too far. =/ So I went to UCONN's mercury lab and i went to Harvard-MIT's otolarynology lab over the summer with a MIT professor (but I guess you can't beat two years of internship compared to one summer internship. lol)

I have a question, it seems like the vast majority of ppl do research at a college lab, but I didn't I did mine on my own at home (I studied the probability for photons to undergo quantum tunneling). I sent in my paper (16 pages) for revie by a professor, and my question is do you think the adcom will view my work favorably bc I did it on my own or unfavorably? Or do you think of will be about the same?

Why are there no engineers here? I applied under mechanical engineering, but I might switch to applied physics or chemistry. Does anyone here plan on getting a PhD?

^ Agreed! Dbate, your self-research is impressive! I did some self studying/research on stem cells, but I didn't have any means to do actual experiments...

I had to special order the stuff (gunnplexers aren't sold at walmart), I have been doing independent research since I was in seventh grade so I learned the stuff as a combination of years of self-study and completing projects every year for science fair. But within the project I used large scale photons (10 ghz) so it simplified the appartus so that I could do it in my bedroom. I made my self-study stuff a big part of my app, bc I am the only person at my school who competes in science fairs so I even had to register and drive myself to competitions and I taught evwrything to myself (I got rejected from the research programs I applied to bc I only got 197 on the PSAT, thank goodness Yale only requires the act). I sent my paper in, the end of the project was that photons have a sinsuidoal probabilty to undergo quatum tunneling. I was really worried for a long time bc my project seemed simple to me, but many ppl are impressed so hopefully the adcom will be as well :). And if that doesn't work them I still have a URM hook (one of my common app essays was about being the only black person at science fair).
