I was just wondering whether anyone has actually received an appointment kit in the mail yet for the Air Force Academy. I have a nomination and an LOA, and I have not yet receieved my appointment kit. Some idea of how many are out may be comforting…

I think there is a real paperwork backlog up there. Our son mailed in his last thing (the graded essay) 2-3 weeks ago and when he calls for the recorded message about the status of his application, it still says that's not turned in. He called and talked to a real person, and she said that they have a lot of paperwork backed up at this time of year so not to worry. When he sent in some of his other paperwork, it was about a month before it all made it into his file.

We heard that they have a board meeting once a week right now. What I am wondering is if you are not selected, will you be notified right away or do they save all those for the end? I'm guessing they save them because they have to wait and see how many people accept the appointments that they are offered.

Ryan, when did your last thing (nomination/loa) get turned in? Since you are a "shoo-in", I'm curious as to how long it takes when the appointment is definitely coming.

The last correspondence I have receieved from them was a little white postcard (man those things are really dumb by the way..) that said "You have receieved an official nomination." That was on Feb 1 when it was mailed.

I got my acceptance this week along with a few other guys. I am in the prep school program (falcon foundation) and all six of us were accepted this week. I know all the falcon foundation guys were evaluated this week.

Still waiting to hear too. Got the nomination dated Feb 2.

timely, you brought up an interesting point. Does anyone know if the academy will ever look at a candidate this late in the admissions process and decide that they are not appointment-worthy? Say for instance, trouble with the law, failing grades, etc. Or would they just wait until all candidates have been chosen before they notify the individual?

I got mine earlier this month - Mid February. I got the nomination early January timeframe. It's really too late to try and submit new information but considering that they will allow nominees to get their files together until 15 March, I'd say you still stand a chance at receiving an Appointment. They notify around the same time as normal colleges for the majority of applicants because they wait for those that get early Appointments to accept or decline (just a guess). I hope that helps, keep praying (if that's the sort of thing you do) and just keep working.

Congratulations rchlebek05! I highly recommend that you consider attending one of the candidate orientation sessions which are held in April. You get a good view of the Academy and have an opportunity to shadow a cadet for one night and the next day. According to General Rosa, of the cadets that left the academy last year during BCT all but 2 had not attended the orientation. My son found the orietnation to be very helpful in making his final decision to attend the Academy, and has been very happy there.

You will receive a package with your appoinment notification from the Academy--it will have the information regarding the orientation sessions and lots of other information --The other advice I can give you is to buy your boots at the orinetation and follow their advice to break them in well. My son did not break his in enough and ended up with blisters during the first few days of BCT.

Out of curiosity, what does the "appointment kit" look like? Does it come FedEx or US Mail and how big is it? Does the appointment come in a discreet letter like Annapolis or a nice green folder like West Point? Haha, sorry I'm a little nervous (my file goes before the board this Monday or Tuesday I believe) and so I just want to know what an actual appointment is like. Thanks!

You will receive a phone call from the office of the person who nomintated you (in my son's case it was a State Senator) The actual packet from the Academy arrived a few days later. It is 9" x 12" gray envelope with Air Force Blue print with "Offer of Appointment Enclosed" on the front. Good Luck--
