does anyone know about any good architecture schools?
I have heard of cooper Union in NYC and Cal Poly in Cali but any other ones?

Berkely
I think U of A has a good program
RISD
Oregon

thanks! very much appreciated!

Syracuse has a decent program as well from what I understand.

Some other programs to look into: Cornell, Lehigh, Georgia Inst. of Technology, U of Arizona, Univ. of Southern Calif., U of Washington, Washington U in St. Louis, U of Michigan, U of Miami.

You might also try posting this on the parents board - Soozievt, a parent, did quite a bit of research on arch. programs with her daughter last year and might have some good ideas for you.

doesn't MIT have a decent program?

Well, heck yeah!

thank you!

Kent State has a competitive program for architecture. You have to study a semester abroad though usually. I think in Italy.

Yea, I was interested in architecture for a while, until I saw job placement is horrible, they make next to nothing and up to half eventually switch to engineering.

Cal Poly-SLO does have a very good architecture program. USC does as well. My roommate last year transferred from UCLA to come to USC for the architecture program. She loved it, but be warned: it's extremely time-consuming!

I replied to you, Gabby, on the Parents Forum, so look there.

You should also check out Rice's school of architecture. Their program is ranked in the top ten as well.

yeah i looked at rice. im gonna apply there ... but its very competitive.... even for texas residents.... yeah celebrian im really thinking about maybe civil engineering too! But im gonna try it and see what it's all about..... so wish me luck! thanks soozievt!

Go to www.naab.org for a list of accredited programs.

yeah i have seen the site. thanks .hmmm i wonder which is the best school to apply to...

I have a lot of friends who are architects. After asking a few of them which programs they thought were 'creme de la creme' in the country, I was told that the schools that are pretty much accepted as the best by architects themselves are (in no particular order): Harvard, Yale, Princeton, UVA, Berkeley, Cornell, Rice, MIT and Columbia. Apparently, the graduates of these schools make up most of the employees at America's top architectural firms.

Northeastern in Boston.

Globalist, the problem with that list is we are talking apples and oranges. Some of those programs are graduate programs (i.e, Harvard, Yale, Princeton). As far as undergraduate programs there are professional five year BArch programs (i.e, Cornell) and there are BA majors in a liberal arts programs (i.e., Yale, MIT, Princeton) where students must get a MArch degree to practice. So, lists like that one do not help unless you know which degree the student is looking for. This poster is looking for the five year BArch degree and thus several schools on that list do not fit that option....whereas schools like Cornell or Carnegie Mellon, do.

I didn't realize that GabbyRenee only wanted a 5 year BArch degree.

Nonetheless, i just talked to my friend Anne who went to UVa & Yale for Architecture, and she told me about the point system for architects. Apparently, you need to accrue enough points to take the licensing exam (it's like the bar exam for law). The best way of acquiring points is by getting a masters, so people who attend a 4 year BArch degree like from UVa or 5 year BArch degree from Cornell should still end up going after a masters. (The other way of getting points is by working for 6/7 years, but this is obviously the longer route.) The biggest difference in the end is the amount of years of grad school you'll need. If you did a 5 year undergrad program, you can get a masters in 2 years, as opposed to 3 years for people who did the 4 year undergrad program. But this depends on the school. Because Yale had such high respect for Anne's 4 year UVa BArch degree, she was allowed to finish Yale's grad program in 2 years.

The best architecture school with prestidge, great history, and cheap is Illionois Institute of Technology. In their history, they had a couple offamous archiltects. Its a greeat school in the Chicago area and really prestigious for architecture as well as hard. They offer merit scholarships and if you are a good student, ou can get one. Good Luck!
