Son is doing an overnight visit to a DII soccer program. I guess it is an unofficial visit as we are paying for transportation. Son is scheduled to watch conditioning and weightlifting sessions. Am I correct that he would not be allowed to participate at all?

I know in D2 baseball a recruit is allowed to participate in activities regardless of official or unofficial. Conditioning and weighlifting are training activities and I just don’t see the benefit for them to ask you son to participate in that. If it was skills drills or a game that would be something different. I’d probably ask the coach directly if they intend for your son to participate. JMO.

In D1, for both official and unofficial,

“A prospect may participate in recreational activities during a visit to campus, provided the activities are not organized or observed by members of the athletics department, are not designed to test the athletic abilities of the prospect and any institutional facility used by the prospect is open to the general public.”

In D2, for official visits, “A prospect visiting an institution may participate in physical workouts provided the activities are not organized or observed by members of the coaching staff.”

Note, in D2, there are separate requirements and procedures for on-campus tryouts, separate from official or unofficial visits.

I’m not sure what the official rules for D2 soccer are, but I do know that my son did an on-campus try-out with the team and with the coach watching during his HS senior year. He did have to fill out releases and had to have a physical prior to the try-out but fortunately we were able to use the same physical they did every year for high school soccer. He was not allowed to participate in practices during visits but that was at least partially due to the school’s own liability rules. It may have had something to do with NCAA rules also, but I don’t know that.
