is there anyone trying to get into this school that are more average like me?
i am starting to feel like an idiot!

what do you consider "average"?

yes, thank goodness for i am just an average candidate and i am so overwhelmed by all these super smart candidates applying! i guess i am average for the school

well, I am in honors and ap classes and i make As but I am not superman.
I have played sports but not the captain. I scored very well on my tests but not perfect and I have not won a ton of awards. Like maybe in top 10 but not top 1% of class!!! So average.

i guess you can count me in the average group too. if you think about it, for most schools like vandy...cc-ers mostly represent the top of the applicant pools, so the stats you see on here aren't necessarily a good idea of the "average stats" for a school.

yeah but it starts to get a little overwhelming when there are no posts for us reg folks. and all of the likely letter stuff and the invitations and phone calls to this or that. yes...sour grapes. and congrats to you all that gets this stuff but i don't. i would just love to get a plain ole letter with a positive answer!

i hear ya...at least we don't have too much longer to wait.

Me, me, me!!!
Average if not below average..
GPA: 3.75(UW), 4.1(W)
1 C - Eng2 (1)
7 B AP Euro(1,2), Alg2TrigH (2), Eng2(2), Bio(1), Eng4(1), AP Physics (1)
5APs, 5 College courses
ACT: 32
(Eng 31, Red 28, Math 34, Sci 36)
SAT II: 800/ 800/ 740/ 670

sigh

Only having two 800s on your SAT IIs is certainly below average. Everyone has AT LEAST three. C'mon, people.

two 800s and a 32 w perfect on the sci is certainly above average

if you believe that your scores alone or your gpa will define you and merit admission, you are deluding yourself. Ask yourself: what can I contribute to the Vandy community?
There are many normal, interesting people who bring a lot more to the Vandy community other than robotic insecure striving for grades and perfect 800s. Read Shain's comments and you can gain an understanding.

well said musictoad

See, that is all good and well, but what happens more often than not is that the kids with top scores will get in over average applicants with good activities/essays.. this was the case with another great school I applied to ED, and while I consider myself very strong extracurricular-wise, two other girls who are nothing but robots and have little to no extracurriculars/awards/leadership got in, while I got deferrred. I know Vanderbilt is not the school that I speak of, but still.. numbers are numbers and kids with the top scores will more often than not get in over an average applicant with great activities/essays. Just a thought from what I see and hear.

Three 800's on an SAT II is not average, haha

I consider myself average for Vanderbilt anway, at least test-score wise: 2050 SAT, and 780, 600, 630 on SAT II's..

whoa, chill out merume...you must be a girl, because if you were a guy you would be boasting about how high your scores are and claiming you'll get in everywhere...you are certainly above average...your scores are excellent, please do not underestimate yourself.

I am sorry if I offended anyone...

I was felling so bad after seeing someone saying

"I have 3.9UW, 4.8W, and 237on PSAT, will I get in to blah blah??"

...
...

I am really sorry if my post was offending to anyone.

And besides, I have a very nice counselor (public school) who looks at my transcript and says

you shouldn't even waste your money on applying to 4-year universities. Just go to CC that's right across the street. If you have that many B's and even a C... no one is going to take you

yeah really, IMO I have the best counselor in the entire nation

fjchowhdry--it is too simplistic to state that it is the sats and gpa that got the two robot girls admitted to a particular school. ECs and ESSAYS and RECS can make or break those gpa or perfect 800s--especially at Vandy.

Last year I had the opportunity to see Vandy put on an admissions night at a local HS. The parents and kids were seated at tables throughout the room. Each candidate's essays, recs, gpa and scores were reviewed and each table gave the yes or no vote.

You wouldn't believe some of the recs for brilliant kids--some of the recs were terrible or terribly prepared. Never assume a smiling teacher knows what you need. Talk to the teacher about what you need from them. Give them info about yourself. Some of the essays were awful. 90% of the essays are cliche: kids talking about grampa/grandma dying and the impact they had on their life; mom was a crack addict, i lived on the street and ate garbage; i went to costa rica over spring break and learned about life, etc.

They are looking for passions--did you notice on Vandy's website they highlight unusual pastimes? ECs are definitely important, but need to be passions, not spread out. You need to convey why they're important to you and to Vandy.

Geography is playing an a role--did you notice Shain's comments on Vandy getting more attention in the eastern corridor? have you noticed Gee's emphasis on making Vandy a national university?

merumemerume--counselors can be idiots. If you presented yourself well and conveyed what you bring to Vandy and why it is the right school for you, you have done the best that needs to be done.

good luck. admissions this year are truly crazy and realize that if you don't get in, there are plenty of good schools out there

Shain's comments related to finding fit within a pool of exceptional applicants. He's not dipping down to a lower stats pool to find good Vandy fit-ers.

lets not make it more complicated than necessary. you are not getting in if you have low scores. you may not get in if you have high scores. but the person with the low scores never ever had a chance. the person with the high scores got compared to the other 12000 with high scores and they picked they best. that is what every single school does. obviously this is simplistic....the high scores have a better chance with the great ecs and the great etc..... but no one out there could possibly think that you can get into this school with low scores. when they say "fit" they mean smart, outgoing, involved, good for the school". they don't mean you sound like a great guy even if you grades and scores suck.

don't mean to tick anyone off but sometimes you just have to use common sense. i am not getting in!!!

my friend julie got in and she made a 1510 on the SAT. and shes not in 1% either. but she is a urm
