I see so many 3.9+ applying/accepted to JMU. Are there any B+ GPA types admitted too? My son is a jr. but looking at JMU. He has around a 3.5-3.6 weighted, is in NHS, 3 Varsity sports, FCA Officer and lots of volunteer/tutoring. He hasn't taken SATs yet but just curious for now about GPAs of those who were admitted. Also, if he has a lower GPA than some, should he do ED or RD? Wasn't sure how GPA factored into that decision. Thanks.

From my NY public HS average accepted GPA approx 90

yeah.. there are people here who get in with 3.5-3.6 GPAs, but definitely encourage him to try and get it up because JMU can sometimes be a crapshoot to get in. As for applying ED or RD: if he has awesome extracurriculars and leadership positions and wants a chance at one of the Dingledine or Bluestone scholarships (based on merit, not state residency like a lot are) he HAS to apply ED. I've known people from my school get into JMU ED with stats like his and also some RD.
I am a current JMU student, so if you have any more questions about JMU let me know:)

I got in with an 85 avg UW last year.

and collegekid, you're most likely getting in, so don't worry. I would just work on that SAT score though.

well it didnt change after getting my new scores, you think i can get in now as out of state student?

Roughly, what letter grade does a 3.3 or 3.4 equate to ? Thanks.

my scores didn't change either.
1610/2400 GPA 3.4 uw 3.6w

Supposed to go to open house on Sat. Is it worth me even taking the trip. 6 hour drive! UGH!!!!

MBJ a 3.3 is a B+ on a 4.0 scale.

hayze -- have you visited the campus? If not, I think it would be worth making the trip in order to get a sense of the school.

From what I understand the average GPA is a 3.6 or 3.7 in CORE courses (meaning english, history, math, science, etc.) For that to be the average it means that students with 3.3/ 3.4 GPA who took a rigorous course load, and have strong ECs could get in.

Competitive candidates will have mostly As and Bs in the core academic areas (English, math, lab science, social science and foreign language)

Competitive candidates for admission will have taken upper level coursework in the core academic areas (i.e. Honors, AP, IB, Dual Enrollment) when available in their high school.

You are coming from the NY area? I teach at JMU and make the drive a lot o NYC.... it is a pretty drive!

MBJ a 3.3 is a B+ on a 4.0 scale.... meaning that a 4.0 is an A.

hayze -- if you have not visited the campus I would recommend making the trip to get a sense of the campus. I teach at JMU and drive up to NYC a lot.... it is a pretty drive.

a 3.4 uw GPA would be within range, particularly if you have taken a rigorous course load and have strong ECs.

Good Luck

im going on a tour monday the 27th, should i go the 3 hour trip with a 1510 and a 3.72 GPA and a crap load of EC's, Volunteer, and work experience

I'm going to go...and keep my fingers crossed.

Collegekid5 and hayze definitely go. My son had higher SAT's but he was only a B student. It is over a 11 hour drive for us. He thought he had no chance. The admissions office most saw his potential and accepted him. He is currently a freshman. He has told me that most of the kids he met all had GPA's around 3.8 in high school.

Good Luck!

OOS kids from our NJ public were admitted with B averages and 1100-1200 SAT's FYI....

few honors classes, no AP's..

oops.... didn't mean to post twice... :)
