Any benefits to joining Golden Key International Honor Society?

S received email invite to join Golden Key.... Neither of us are familiar w/organization, but brief glimpse of website looks like another group that just wants registration fee. Any insights/experiences with Golden Key International Honor Society? Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Lol, you beat me to this. S just asked us the same question. I dismissed it, because I remember a similar group with my D after her first year and it seemed mostly to be about selling their merchandise. But, I did look at the Golden Key website and one difference is that it has campus chapters that sponsor some events. So, perhaps there is a way for your S to find out who is in his campus chapter and see whether or not they think it is worthwhile.

I'd love to hear from anybody else on this.

I checked the campus chapter link and saw absolutely no information posted. Clicked on a couple of other campus links and saw lists of activities, officers, etc, so assume this campus is not "active" in golden key.

Still would appreciate any other input.

Not going to help with college admissions. Honor Society membership in name only, will not differential your kid from thousands of others. Colleges are looking for kids who actually do something.

BTW, if your high school nominates for National Honor Society, that is different and worth putting on applications because it is by nomination by those that know the student.

Blu - This is a college "honor" society. Supposedly helps w/scholarship $$, internships, etc. Student is invited to join based on college gpa. My query, is it for real or just a gimick to get the enrollment fee? No visible activity on S' college campus chapter per Golden Key campus link.

The Mom -- Interesting heated discussion about it on Wikipedia.

It seems to really vary by chapter.

My S just got his invitation in the mail. He's a college senior and already has a job lined up after graduation. Don't think he needs to spend $70 for their "networking" opportunities.

It MAY be worth it if you go to a school where nothing else is happening and you are looking for something to do. I doubt it makes even less difference, however, than NHS did in high school. If you have the GPA and are a leader, you don't need to be validated by an honor society.

Unless, of course, it is Phi Beta Kappa, which really is by invitation only from those that know you.

I was invited to join Golden Key so I contacted my adviser in the School of Nursing. They told me that there was no "negativity" associated w/that org, so I joined. I was never involved as I was more involved in my Nursing Honor Society, but from what I have heard, they do offer a lot in the way of scholarships for its members. They also invited me to be a post-graduate representative of its council in Nursing. It is true that some chapters are more active than others. You will want to check with the individual college to determine how active they are and the benefits of joining. I don't see the harm in anything that you can potentially put on your resume to make you stand out above others. After all, you have to be in the top 15% of your entire college to get invited. There should be some benefit in that, right?
