Haven't seen many... Would be nice to chat with one during this incredibly stressful FINAL COUNTDOWN!

i applied as soc major for berk.

I applied to Berkeley as well, but who knows if I’ll get in… My main focus as of now is finding out UCLA decisions. I’m a nervous wreck lol

I am a total nervous wreck too! I think I’m driving everyone I know crazy.

Just some info about me…

CCC transfer (mostly Santa Rosa, a couple classes at CCSF)
GPA: 3.86
IGETC and prereqs done by spring (only have one class this semester which I’m fairly confident I’ll be getting an A in)

I’m 27, so my only EC’s are work, which I am hoping they appreciate and don’t punish me for. As far as I’ve heard, they understand that older students don’t have a lot of time for anything other than work (that is, if they’re going to school as well).

This is actually my second time going through the UC application process. Last year, I applied as an Econ major. I got rejected from UCB (couldn’t finish Calculus 1B) and got in to UC Davis thinking I would be able to stay in the bay area and commute to school. DIDN’T WORK! So I withdrew my intent to register, changed my major, and am now taking another stab at Berkeley. I was just as interested in Sociology and knew it would be much easier to get into than Econ, which everyone and their mother is majoring in apparently!

So what’s your story? Also, what do you think about double majors/simultaneous degrees? Or what are you minoring in?

I’m a soc major too!!
I think you definately have a good shot at berkeley, & I think your age will actually help you with admissions.

For me:
CC transfer
GPA: 3.93
EC: Average
Personal statements: 8/10
Applied: Berkeley, UCLA, and UCI but I really only want to go to Berkeley.

just 10 more days!!!
good luck to you guys :)

Sociology FTW!
Applied: UCB, UCLA, UCI
GPA: 3.81
PS: Wrote it in 2 days…Bleh
EC: 8 years in military

Good luck peeps!

wooooooo!! good luck oppa!

Thanks Ms. Doe! If you get into LA and Cal, where you headed?

dunno, some times i have bouts of hippie moments and think of Bizerkeley other times i have bouts of major UCLA love.
quarter system is a perk for me though. but i will have to visit each campus once again before i make my final decision.

CC transfer
GPA:3.94
Personal statement:8/10
ECs: PTK, a couple of volunteers every weekend
international student

I’m so nervous and can’t even concentrate on research paper coming due…
Good luck you guys!!!

You guys all sound like great candidates, but I can’t help but feel like it’s such a lottery this year!

The UCLA acceptance/rejection threads are totally freaking me out! Given:I don’t know the whole story, but I’m seeing so many 4.0 “perfect” students rejected, and people with a 3.2 who can’t spell (“congraduations”? really?!) accepted.

We’ve still got 9 days to go, and I’m already formulating an elaborate appeal in case I’m rejected! I guess I should just calm down :)

…Maybe I should pay the admissions officers a visit with a plate of my famously amazing cupcakes and my ultra-cute 5-month-old puppy…

Good luck you guys. I’m a Sociology major at Cal and I transferred here last fall. If you have any questions about this GREAT department don’t hesitate to ask.

@jhamp: Congratulations on Cal! Were you a cc transfer?? If so, how was the transition from CC sociology to Cal sociology?? Was it much harder for you?

Yeah I transferred from CC last Fall. I have found the transition to be pretty good. I feel like the classes are harder than community college, but they are definitely within your academic ability if you got into Cal. My first semester I got a 3.8 and I transferred with a 3.4 and this semester my classes are going just as well. I think that if you are really interested in Sociology then this is the place for you to go because there are so many ways to get involved in the Sociology department. Our department, like most Soc depts is known to be pretty liberal, and most of the people that were occupying the buildings last Fall happened to be Sociology majors. One thing that I was nervous about when coming here was if I would be able to keep up with the work and it seems like in the Sociology major along with other social science, the transfer students tend to do better than the people who came in as freshman. Good luck on admission!! (I believe its tomorrow or in two days!)

^ Did you transfer over with your 3.4? Or did you start all over with a new GPA. I have heard that once you transfer over your, it’s like you get a clean slate with your GPA.

Yeah, when I transferred here I did not carry on my CC GPA. I didn’t have a UC GPA until after the end of my first semester, so you don’t have to worry about your CC GPA after transferring unless you want to go to Law School or some other type of graduate program which aggregates all of your college coursework from all institutions that you’ve attended.

@jhamp916 Did you have to move out to Cal? If so, how was your transition?

Yeah, I’m from Sacramento, so I had to move out to Berkeley. It is only about an hour or so away, so it wasn’t too big of a transition geographically, but it was a very drastic cultural transition. I am living in the dorms this year, in a triple, and both of my roommates are transfer students as well. I think that living in the dorms helped the transition because there’s tons of things that one doesn’t think about before they move. People that I know that live off-campus who were also incoming transfers tend to be more stressed on average. Living in the dorms, you don’t have to worry about things like grocery shopping, paying electric bills,…and it may not seem like much of a burden at first, but when you have tons of readings and essays, it can become very taxing. I think that the overall transition has been great. I definitely have to work harder here to keep with everyone else, but it hasn’t been too daunting of a task.

One thing that I have found here, it has probably been said many times but I’ll say it again and that is the difference between Cal and community college is that there are tons of people who are at your level academically. It’s not so much that they are smarter than you, but it’s that they are equal to you. Many of the things you may have said in class in community college to woo the class over will be basic here and people won’t look at your opinion so admirably because they know just as much as you do. One thing that I was told when I first got into Berkeley was that there are about 5% of the student population here that can truly be classified as geniouses and the other 95% are pretending to be geniouses. After being here for almost a year, I would have to agree with that statement.

I wouldn’t be too nervous about getting good grades once you get in, if you work hard you will do excellent. When I first got here, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to maintain a 3.0, but now that I’m here a 3.0 is attainable by almost doing the bare minimum of work, at least in the social sciences/ humanities. I noticed that from the outside looking in (As I was a year ago from today), it seems so intimidating and nerve-wrecking, (I almost picked UCSC over Cal because I was worried about competitiveness), but if you are able to get in you are definitely capable of excelling.

As a final note, one of the top students, if not the top student in the Sociology department is a transfer student and another transfer student I know of just got into UCLA’s Sociology PhD program. With that being said, the academic transition should be one of the least of your worries, we have fee hikes to stop!

Good luck!!

I got rejected transfer to UCLA today with an overall 4.0 (soc major). Followed the IGTEC. Now I’m terrified that Berkeley will turn me down :(

Apparently I missed a calc class. I followed assist for a few schools prereqs, none of which required calc. So I assumed UCLA was no different. Other than that I had the other prereqs and the IGETC completed. I guess UCLA is SUPER anal about their prereqs. I can’t think of any other reason I would have got rejected. Lots of ECs.
