What courses did you take, or plan to take, your freshman year? Is it true that freshmen usually take only one science course their first year such as Intro to Biol as opposed to taking Chemistry or another science as well? Were your other classes just the courses used to satisfy the Core Curriculum, basic requirements for graduation? I'm asking because I was told by my advisor that it was 'unusual' to take more than one science course Freshman year, which I think otherwise. I am only scheduled to take an Intro Biol class during the first semester and I thought that Biol. majors would be required to take more.

I think you should take more than only one science course. I'm diving into Organic Chemistry and Intro to Advanced Genetics this fall :D (Although I'm having only 12 hours of classes due to the fear of organic chem) If you think you can handle it, sign up for the science classes. I think a lot of people are going to be taking intro to bio AND intro to chem this fall, or I think. You can do anything with your schedule. Your other requirements can be done in later years, but I think most people like to just get it over with before they're upperclassmen.

The following is the URL to the degree checklist for a BA in biology. The second page shows the course progression plan by semester.

A typical freshman Biology major is expected to take Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus in the first semester.

Calculus is a co-requsite/prerequisite for Chemistry. Chemistry is a co-requisite for Biology.

Hello JehJar. I'm planning to major in biology, too. I plan to take: Intro to bio, intro to chem, bio lab, calculus, and an elective. I'll have around 15 hours this fall semester. I believe that's around average?

I'm doing exactly the same at Uthorns, i got into a FIG that put me directly into Intro Bio, Intro Chem, and Bio Lab. othe that that i added Calc and Economics... 15 hours for me
