Aps- 55555444
National merit finalis
Gpa- 3.6 weighted ( highest possible 4.15)
Midyear senior gpa - 2.9
School- very good
Recs- stellar for showing my intellectual promise, not necessarily for my actual performance in the class

Essays- pretty specific. Why Chicago essay that talked about the stories I'd heard of it growing up
unfortunately I never got any of my essays reviewed by anyone. I sort of was packaged/sold as very intellectual in both the humanities and math/sciences but leaning more towards writing/literature type stuff. this was how my counselor (also my former teacher), I'm sure, described me as we'll in her rec.
So, I my writing talent was touted in 2 recs but I may have not delivered. My common app essay was pretty risky and not really personal in the way that most others are. My extended essay was quirky, but very clearly the product of a distracted, teenage mind ( both in its subject matter and writing style)

Obviously he gpa wasn't stellar to bein with, but the midyear report may have killed my chances.
What do you think?
Thanks a lot

And ECs are not anything stellar either

You should have applied EA… could have gotten accepted before they saw that midyear GPA. Ah, no, I just noticed that your WEIGHTED GPA is 3.65. I would guess that a courtesy waitlist (if U of C does those…) or rejection is in your future. Sorry.

thanks for your response
So you really think there’s no chance anymore?
I really wish I had applied early. My counselors didn’t really tell me that my chances would’ve been much better, especially as a legacy.

There is another thread out on the U of C forum where they are discussing right now whether legacy means a boost. Apparently the boost is small at U of C, if it exists at all. So given your GPA, I think it probably would not have helped to apply EA. I mean… strange things happen sometimes in the admissions process. So you could get good news in March. But your GPA is really low in a year when they got over 30,000 applications.

Your scores are great, but your GPA and ECs are on the weak side for the school, it is a reach.

but does anyone have experience with applying as a legacy at chicago

High match or low reach

Very high reach. Your GPA is too low, and you’re most likely going to be rejected. Trust me, I know the school well.

any more opinions?

I’m white if it makes a difference

I want more chancesssss

GPA’s killing you. It’s a reach (not a high reach) because of your SAT score, but don’t put too much hope in it.

ok
will legacy help at all

According to the College Board (which gives a list of what each college looks for/how much it is valued based on reports that the colleges themselves fill out) yes, though minimally. On College Board it is placed in the “Considered” category which is the least valued category under their ranking system. So basically don’t count on you being a legacy leading to your acceptance.

I know I’m definitely not counting on it
is it the unweighted or weighted gpa that’s more important?

Unweighted, schools will recalculate your weighted using their own system.

k how do u think my chances are for reed, Johns Hopkins, wash u, swarthmore, Williams, and nyu stern

low reach or high match even
