Received a D in AP Chemistry. 710 on the SAT II...
I don't know where to explain this but, my situation is that during Junior year, in addition to the stress of all activities being alone for most of the time after my mother lost her job, I lost a very close relative that I had a close relationship with (Aunt) and was really devastated because I had been contacting her and visiting her since I was younger...Guidance counselor will be writing about this in her letter to colleges I'm applying to...other than that here are the stats...Currently have an A+ in AP Physics though..

Also have a supplemental rec. sent in by the advisor I worked for during the summer at Yale. He is a professor at the university and is the Chairman of the Genetics department. Will it give me a boost?

Common app essay was very good in my opinion

Opinions+suggestions?

Thanks!

Would I have a any chance with early decision? Visited their campus and loved it...
I know predictions won't be accurate but I would still appreciate input and "chances"

Thank you and don't be too overly harsh..PLEASE comment!

Based purely on your grades and SAT’s, I’d have to say that Cornell looks like a ‘reach’ school for you.

You do have a few things that may improve your chances (such as what your research advisor will say, in a recommendation, etc.)

As to your Junior year – IMHO, the best way to have this presented is by your guidance counsellor, in the GC recommendation letter. If Freshman and Sophomore years were solid, and it’s only Jr. year that was off, such an explanation may help you, though unfortunately, I also don’t have a basis for analyzing how much it might.

Well I’m probably as clueless as you, but that D in Chem/your GPA will make it a lot tougher for you to have a decent chance. Mines is a bit higher and the general consensus I got is that I have a 25-40% chance of making it, but I also essentially completed highschool in 3 years. If the admissions officers take your extenuating circumstances into account and forgive your D and GPA, you would stand a decent, 30-50% shot at ED. If not though, my opinion is that you really wouldnt stand much of a chance.

Cases with extenuating circumstances make it tough to give chances. Your GPA is pretty terrible (for Cornell). Assuming it’s less than a 3.9 almost entirely because of that D in AP Chem means you have a shot. The SAT II Chemistry score certainly helps your case. I’d say you have average chances based on the given information and the guidance counselor recommendation. So if you apply ED, that puts you at roughly 45%, which isn’t bad. Other than your GPA, your SAT is average for admitted students (roughly) and your EC’s are probably above average (but nothing spectacular). I’m hesitant to go above giving you average chances because I really can’t know how admissions will interpret your situation regarding the low score.

Thank you for the reply guys…so the census is about a 30% chance of getting in?
Also, my guidance counselor did write about my circumstance in her letter…

I really appreciate the opinions guys!

any other opinions out there?

Anyone else care to chime in? Appreciate any opinions! Nervously waiting for December 8th.

Anyone? 6 days left!

Did anyone here have your counselor asked to send your term grades to the admission office?

@curiousgeorge no, not that I know of
@stevenl just wait 6 more days, then you will know for sure!

The suspense and scenarios are killing me Cayuga!

you took the right classes and did great extra curriculars, but it’s no surprise to you your gpa is kind of low. i mean maybe you go to a really intense high school, so who’s to say. if you do, cornell will realize that. 2100 is a great sat score but doesn’t give you an edge over any other kids applying to cornell. the chemistry subject test shows that despite your D you actually understood the material, which is good, but I also think it might make the school think you have high aptitude but low achievement in that particular class. but no one’s perfect. you still seem like you have a well rounded profile and are obviously a smart kid. and to be blunt, ethnicity could play a major role in this. good luck!!!
