Any Chance At All?!?!

im a senior who goes to a magnet school in VA.
i take three IB classes including English, History, and Theatre.
the rest of my schedule includes advanced/honors.
my GPA is around a 3.7 and my SATs are equally mediocre @ 1650
i have crazy EC's though including soccer, roots and shoots, theatre guild, beta club, french club, german club, journalism, amnesty international, model UN, founder of debate team, habitat for humanity, tutoring middle school kids, SCA, blah blah blah...
im taking the ACT in october, hoping for 25 or above on that.

i am wondering if i have any chance at the following schools: reach/match/safety?

William and Mary
George Mason
James Madison
UVA
Mary Washington
American University
George Washington

despite mediocre grades/sats, are there any advantages i would have considering i have IB classes and an outstanding essay, application/teacher recommendation? (+ ECs)

PLEASE RESPOND!!!

i would take u into most college, but im just another senior applying
best shot is to get great recs, apply ED somewhere and hope for the best, im sure u will get in somewhere

thanx... i was dreading a response considering my low academic achievement but i do plan on improving during my 1st semester of senior year. i am poised to make A's in all my classes which will bring my gpa up to a 3.8 and i am counting on my ACT score to do me justice unlike the SAT. i know that UVA is a definite reach but my girlfriend insisted on it being put on the list. i am particularly interested in William and Mary for early decision but am not sure if that will pay off.

can anyone shed some light on William and Mary?

Male/Female?? Class rank? Northern VA?? You're looking very good......................

George Mason-Accepted/Honors
JMU-Accepted
Mary Washington-Accepted
William and Mary-need more info, maybe...................

Very good EC's, SAT's a little low for W&M but then again, mine were too. Class rank, location and sex, please..........

male/southern virginia near N.C./ class rank= top 20%

i believe that i may have an advantage coming from southern virginia where competition is scarce for colleges like WM.

ok does anyone have an idea of whether or not i could make it into GWU?

As for William and Mary.......ask your guidance counselor for the statistics of last years students that applied and were accepted to W&M from you high school. See how your stats compare. W&M will want representation from your area. Your class ranking is low and too low in my opinion for William and Mary. I predict a waitlist status. William and Mary and UVA are reaches for you. Don't know anything about GWU.

yeah i knew UVA was a reach but WM i wasnt certain of. thanks for the help!

Do you go to one of the Governor schools over there?

Does your school have a good reputation with William and Mary?

well i attend a magnet high school which is the best public school in our city and probably throughout southside Va. it was given an 8 million dollar magnet grant 4 years ago when it was created. its focus is technology and so forth but the school has developed and is now IB accredited. my graduating class is around 70 and those in the top of our class are IB diploma students(6 in all). i could attend governor's school but i might as well take more IB classes. none of the student who have graduated have gone to william and mary and im not even sure if people have applied. several have gone to UVA and Virginia Tech. my class will actually be the first four year graduating class.

William and Mary will be aware that they have had few applicants from your school in the past. I think this works FOR you rather than against you. William and Mary is by no means "out of the question for you". Call the admissions office and show your interest in W&M. Visit the campus, overnight visit, Fall Focus Days. Those are the things that are going to stand out with William and Mary. Call and ask admissions staff questions about your intended major. I think all of these things will help you. Good luck!
