I am going to be a senior(class of '10) aspiring to go to Cal Poly SLO and I was wondering if, given my stats, anyone could tell me if I have a decent shot at getting accepted for engineering, either electrical or mechanical.

It’s all about the stats with Cal Poly – GPA and SAT/ACT scores. There is a place on their web site that tells you what comparable scores were for certain majors. They don’t weigh extracurriculars much, from what I can tell.

GPA is a bit low but your course load is good. Location is a big factor with preference going to the surrounding CA counties. Also you may be facing severe enrollment limitations given the eternal CA budget fiasco.

Are you out of state? (Classes at U of N). I’m not sure how that normally plays but given the budget fiasco that CA is in, it certainly can’t help.

Cal Poly is a dream school for my son, but with his 3.0 Cal Poly GPA, and out of area residence, I just don’t think it’s going to happen. SAT’s help. You can checkout the formula for CSU’s in general, but you might want to check the Cal Poly forum for a more realistic view.

College Confidential kids aside, that’s a HECK of an SAT score! Good for him! I’m sure there is an interesting stay to go with the GPA. Hope you will update CC with how it’s going.

Ahh, OCSLODAD, that’s what I suspected – an UBER-high SAT score to go along with that less than stellar GPA, and lots of College level (AP)classes. Congrats to your son!

Cal Poly admissions is all about the numbers.

My son was accepted with similar stats:

Cal Poly GPA: 2.7 ?
SAT CR: 690 Math: 740
4 AP exams (3 were self-study) with scores of 4,4,4 and 3
8 CC classes

So, even if your GPA is low for CPSLO, admission is still possible with a high SAT/ACT and a high “rigor” score. (rigor of HS college prep curriculum).

From what I understand selecting the right major at slo is very important, because after you make it passed the first round (being eligible for admission) you are then competing for a spot within the major. My son wouldn’t have gotten into architecture and probably not ME. He didn’t know that at the time he applied, so he had some luck choosing Comp Sci.
