With good recommendations and a good essay, what are my chances?

You won me over with 1 out of 541 class rank and I also bet you will with those schools too. You have a really good chance. =] Goodluck!!

Your ACT raises a huge red flag for me.

Agree that your test scores look low given that your unweighted GPA is 3.75. My D got into U of C EA with pretty much the same GPA this year and similar ECs, but she had a 2380 superscored SAT to go with it, and a couple of 800 subject tests. I think your list is top heavy if you don’t get your test scores up.

U Chicago - Reach
UC Berkeley - Low Reach
Princeton - Reach
Columbia - Reach
Cornell - Reach
U Mich - I don’t know enough about this school to give an accurate chance
UT Austin - I don’t know enough about this school to give an accurate chance
FSU - Safety

You list is very top heavy, seriously recommend applying to more matches and to have a decent chance at some of these schools you should aim for 33+, or at least 31/32+.

U Chicago: low reach/reach
UC Berkeley: low reach
Princeton: high reach
Columbia: high reach
Cornell: reach
U Mich: low reach/high match
UT Austin: idk, sorry
FSU: safety

Your class rank is great, but your test scores are pretty low, which makes me wonder how competitive your school is. What % of grads go to top schools? Your other stuff looks pretty good though, and essays will really help you out at UChicago – that’s what would make it a low reach rather than a high reach. They definitely sometimes ignore low test scores for an otherwise impressive app.
