Hi all,
I have a 4.0 GPA at a rigorous prep school with lots of advanced/AP courses and have a variety of ECs, many of which I will hold leadership positions in next year. I was wondering if my scores thus far really set me apart in a negative way from the other applicants. I plan on applying SCEA at this point. Here's the score breakdown:

710 M
740 CR
710 W (10 E)

2160/2400 ; 1450/1600

It was weird because I feel least comfortable with CR, so that may bode well for me, as I may be able to raise the other two.

Here's my ACT:

33 W (essay not in yet)
35 M
30 R
32 S

33 C

I barely prepared for either of these tests (practice questions the night before for ACT, a week in a book for SAT), and I am a hard worker, so I think that if I prepare over the summer, I will be able to raise these scores. I was wondering what my targets should be in order to become a competitive applicant at Yale and schools like it (H, Penn, Stanford, etc.). Obviously I will try to do my best and get a perfect score, but I understand that the likelihood of that is very slim. So, any ideas on target scores and preparation methods that work? Thanks!

nvm… ACT essay came in today. 9 :-(… making combined E/W a 31

33 is equal to about a 2200 so stop preping for sat and focus on act

if I can get two good scores, say 34 and 2250, would it be worth it to take both and snd them both?

Applying from a rigorous prep school, first and foremost you have to beat the competition from your school which will be sendng lots of applicants to these schools. Look at past nuumbers from your school.

My next question is not meant to be a negative answer to the question of whether or not you can get into Yale, but merely something I’m curious of. What other schools did you apply to?

No chance. You don’t get in unless your parent is alum.

I am undoubtedly in the top 5 out of a class of 110 or so. Of the other 4 kids who may have a 4.0 (I know of 2 confirmed and 2 that may), I only think that 1 is considering applying to Yale, though her brother got in there and plays football.

Our school usually has 2-3 admitted students, but this year nobody got in.

As to which other schools I’m applying to, I plan on sending in apps to Pitt, Drexel (safeties), Georgetown, NYU (my bro goes there and I love the area, but I’m not sure if that’s where I want to go to college or live after college), Johns Hopkins, probably CMU, definitely Penn (my school is basically a feeder school: sends 10-15 kids there a year with an acceptance rate of over 50%. I think it’s the Philadelphia address), Harvard, Stanford, and a few others that I can;t think of. I still have to whittle my total list down a bit, but I feel like I’m pretty well covered in terms of having some likely schools, some possible schools, and some reaches (obviously).

It’s not the Philly address, it’s the connections those kids have at Penn being from Philly. It’s very cometitive applying from a prep school, I’d work on raising the scores.
