I have the following scores:
SAT: 780 (math), 670 (reading), 760 (writing)
SATII: Math level 2 (800), Chemistry (700)
I was just wondering at a very competitive school like MIT, is a low reading comp score and low chemistry score mean automatic rejection, especially because I’m an international from Canada?
For, any IT, your SAT Subject should be from 750- 800 , I heard this from Caltech AO, if you can’t get your subject test score to above 750 on science / math after studying, then you should probably consider other school. My guess is that AO at IT dont regard it very well when the SAT ii are below 750 on science/ math
Not automatic rejection, but my guess is that you would need a very big hook to compensate for that 700.
25th percentile for science is 740, so yeah. Below 750 is not grounds for automatic rejection, nor will MIT AO tell you you should consider another school–I think I’ve seen stated somewhere that 700+ really is enough to show you’re prepared for MIT but there are many who have gotten in with <700 (woah, Caltech AO sounds harsh, but, as schools with low acceptance rates go, you should be looking at other schools–safeties, etc.). There are internationals who have gotten in with lower scores. But, all we can tell you on here is that if you don’t apply, you have a 0% chance. Only the MIT Admissions Committee can make the decision as to whether there is a chance for you. Remember that MIT has holistic admissions (very, very holistic–I’m quite impressed) and that no single component of your application will keep you out of MIT. A low science SAT score won’t keep you out and neither will a low CR score. Especially not with the fact that your scores aren’t really too far below the ranges. But again, you now have a nonzero chance given the fact that you’ve applied–just work really hard on your essays and show them you are a match for MIT through the rest of your application. MIT sees the person, not just the numbers. I hope this helps.
Thank you so much for the responses guys! I could try doing another sat in January, but the only problem is that my school’s final exams is in January so I don’t want to screw my grades by trying to study for too much. I guess I have two days to think this over.
And btw, just to list three of my main extra curriculars/awards:
I have gotten distinction (highest ranking) in international speech test
Developed quite a few apps and websites
international genetic engineering competition (got bronze)
I think I’ll leave it that just for privacy reasons lol
Try taking the Physics subject test instead. The Chemistry subject test curve is harsher since it’s a self selective group taking it. I would also suggest trying the ACT’s, they tend work better for more logical math/science kids (but practice the science section since it’s really a reading comprehension test and can be over thought). Good luck!
