I haven't heard too much about UMD merit scholarships. I know UMBC has very good merit based aid and have applied there, but does anyone think I will get any at UMD?

SAT: 1490/2140

GPA:4.0 UW (I'm homeschooled so idk how they will view this but I have grades from online AP courses to back it up)

This year I'm taking AP Calc BC and US Gov and am self-studying Physics C Mechanics

Awards: MD Distinguished Semifinalist, Coca-Cola Semifinalist, National Merit Commended

ECs

4 yrs Varsity Soccer (Captain)

3 yrs Basketball (2yrs Varsity and JV Captain)

1 yr Varsity Cross Country (Captain)

4-H-Lots (I don't feel like listing it all)

Yes, I think you’ll get merit aid, but I don’t know if you will be considered for Banneker/Key. Although your GPA and SAT scores put you in that league, your number of AP classes/tests may put you at a disadvantage over kids who come in to UMD with a bunch of APs.

What kind of merit aid are you looking for?

My brother had almost identical grades/scores/ECs (right down to varsity soccer!) and did not receive a dime. I had 3.9 GPA from respected public school but about 100 points higher on the SAT and got 5K a year. My friend, accepted to Harvard, received 1K for two years only.

If you do get any scholarships, I think it’ll be on the smaller end, perhaps some money only for the first 2 yrs. But merit awards at MD can be a crapshoot, really.

ok thanks. I’ve different things about the aid there. I didn’t know if my lack of AP would hurt, but I just found an online site that teaches them this year. I guess its better than not taking any though.
