any chance for rice ed?

my GPA is a 4.0 unweighted and is a 4.19-4.2 Weighted (took too many regular classes freshman and sophomore year.... class rank is 16/325-- should go up after first semester b/c of my 6 APs.. top 5%). For senior year I am gonna take AP English Lit, AP Calc BC, AP Stats, AP Psychology, AP Chem and AP Human Geo (so, I think my course load is somewhat rigorous).

Total APs- 10... besides the ones mentioned above, I have taken AP Bio, APES, AP English Language, and AP World History

I just took the SAT and am expecting at least a 2150 if not a 2230ish.
Took the ACT and got a 30...I did retake those and am awaiting my scores. Though I kept practicing on tests and got 34s, I feel like I bombed this one and got a 32ish....
Also got a 780 on Bio sat 2 and 740 on math level 2.

As for awards, freshman year I won the all A's award, geomerty student of the year, and communication applications student of the year. Sophmore year (at my new school), I recieved the principals honor roll. This year, I won the Discus Award, an academic letter (for receiving a high GPA), and the prinicpal's honor roll twice. I will also be awarded several awards for the congressional award (probably bronze, silver, and gold certificates).

I am an American born Pakistani that can speak urdu quite well (not fluently). I can also read Arabic (haha kind of weird thing about me).

So yeah. If u can tell me whether or not I have a chance for Rice ED that would be great! Any suggestions would be fantastic! Thanks!!

You appear to have a great resume, but universities like Rice often surprise students during the admissions process. Your GPA and standardized test scores seem to meet Rice’s standards as do your extracurricular activities and awards; however, these do not necessarily guarantee acceptance.

A key aspect of the process is essay writing. Make sure you get peers/teachers to review your responses. Set aside a significant amount of time to do this.

Lastly, where are you applying from? This may play a role in your decision. Recently, Rice has made an attempt to admit more out-of-state students and I know that many Texas/Houston high school students apply. If you are an in-state applicant, be aware that you may have more intense competition.

I myself am out-of-state and joining Rice in the fall of 2011. Good luck!

@love4medicine- Thanks for taking out ur time to chance me :). I used to live in Texas, but I moved a year and a half ago to Colorado. So I am out of state.
Do u recommend an interview (on or off campus?)? And, yes I will spend a bunch of time on my essays and will get some great teacher recs
What do u think about the SAT scores? If I get in the 2150-2250 range, should I retake?
Thanks so much!!!

If you’re out of state and ED, with those extracurriculars, decent test scores, and good essays you have a great shot. Apply and see what happens. You’ve done the work, good luck!

Oh, and definitely interview! I feel like that, along with being ED as well, helped me out a lot. Show as much interest as you can.

As said above, your stats put you in range to get in. Focus on the remainder of your application, such as your essays and recommendation letters as well as maintaining your GPA and it will give you a good chance to get in.

The SAT: If you get a 2200, you should be fine.

Regarding the interview, I would recommend this as well. It allows you to put a face (a real person) to your paper application. Either on or off campus interviews will be good.

Good Luck!

Thanks alot guys!! I cant wait to apply!!

you have a good shot at RD. ED only if it’s your absolute 1st choice, not to increase your chance of admission.

@itsme123- So you think that ED will not give me an advantage in the admissions? Rice is one of my top schools, but I think if I had a choice between Rice and lets say Stanford, I think I would go with Stanford (though this would be a VERY difficult situation)

If you think you would choose another university, I would recommend applying RD. It was really helpful for me to see where all I was accepted before I decided where to attend.

ed will give you a slight edge, but advice against doing so just to get in if rice isn’t your absolute top school.

ok, I think it will depend on my score in the fall. As of now, I feel that I have a slim chance of getting into Stanford b/c of my test scores (32 on ACT :frowning: and a 2160 on the SAT). If I can bring those up to around a 34+ (very possible) and 2300+ then I’ll do RD. Thanks for the help!

You should only apply ED to Rice if it is absolutely your top choice; whether or not your test scores will make you more competitive in one applicant pool or the other really shouldn’t be a factor in your decision to apply. Good luck as you make your final decisions!
