@UCIUCD Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely spend more time editing my essays!
@rowerruns: Unfortunately, I chose to write my essay on this prompt: “Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?” and talked about how I studied super hard for science olympiad but didnt win any medals and was like super disapointed but turned myself around. I might talk about research for this yale supplement: "In this essay, please reflect on something you would like us to know about you that we might not learn from the rest of your application, or on something about which you would like to say more. You may write about anything—from personal experiences or interests to intellectual pursuits. "

harryloo: do you have any research that you could carve from your experience and submit to say a science fair?

sure, but pretty much all the science fairs I know of are after college apps. but I did submit my stuff to siemens

ur in pretty good shape with ur ecs/school courses & gpa. just bump up that SAT and im sure you will have a really good chance of getting in.

Thanks bro! I hope I didnt screw up on the october sat!

harryloo: I’m sure you did well on the SAT Math–your score last year must have been a fluke. You got a great score on ap calc and math sat 2, both of which are more challenging than the SAT Math.

That is great that you submitted to Siemen’s. I wish you all of the best. Then it sounds like you had a project of substance. I would certainly write about it on that essay you mentioned you were thinking of. I was just googling around a bit before, and Yale, in particular, seemed keen on hearing about such type of research in which you had some project that you could take some ownership over, which seems like you do.

Are you listing about Siemen’s on your application?

Thanks, rowerruns! I don’t think I’ll list Siemens if I don’t get semifinalist (or whatever the lowest ranking is) or above, since the results come out in like a week.

I would have to agree with Falcon. You have good scores, GPA, and are extremely talented. Apply to the schools you want to be at, and see what you get. Don’t think you can’t achieve something just because other people have better scores or essays or recommendations. Be confident and apply yourself and I could see you getting into Yale or whatever school you choose.

That makes sense. I do not know much about Siemen’s but a little about Intel. I am thinking of potentially aiming for that one for next year. Will you submit for that one? That one seems really involved. Maybe I’m novice but just applying seems like an accomplishment in and of itself. That one is due in Nov., with results after apps are due.

@Coltron: AWWW thats very nice of you!!! I agree, I need to stop being so pessimistic/worried and just give it my best shot!
@rowerrruns: haha one of the requirements for intel is that I need to think of the project…but my mentor at cityofhope did most of the planning…and my mentor needs to fill out a form saying that i thought of the project myself…which aint happening lol

You have a very impressive application. You should stay positive and definitely apply early. I think you could get in. And I really hope you do. Good luck!

awwww thanks my friend!

can anyone chance me for those schools ^^^ thanks in advance!

Personally I think you sound great but there is WAY too much detail in your extracurriculars. So much that I think it detracts from their value. Just for example, you say you volunteered 200 hours in a hospital. Then you add “observed medical procedures” and “learned how hospitals function.” Well, of course you did! How could you spend 200 hours anywhere without observing and learning from your surroundings?

Likewise, your lab volunteer work - “learned procedures and protocols used in the lab.” That’s all understood, and the fact that you feel your adcom reader won’t implicitly understand this is, I feel, making you look like you are trying way too hard. I’d scale your whole EC section down by at least half in terms of your descriptions. GL

harryloo - just curious: are you gonna apply early to yale?

What?! Yale’s average SAT is 2380? Almost prefect score, I am actually skeptical about this data

@meow1983: haha yea i just copied and pasted from my resume i dont even think the commonapp will give me that much room to write anyways lol Thanks!
@tidumattud: Yea im doing early…but i got this email from yale which said “Yale’s first admissions deadline is coming up soon. Students who want to apply for the Single-Choice Early Action Program should plan to have their application materials submitted by November 1st. Too soon for you? Don’t worry. Yale’s Regular Decision deadline isn’t until December 31st – and there’s no advantage to applying early.”…so shieeeeettt i guess i dont really have any benefit for applying early.
@lking9210: I havent found any source taht says 2380 is average but I did find this:[Yale University Admissions Statistics and Chances | Parchment - College admissions predictions.](<a href=“Yale University Admissions Statistics and Chances | Parchment - College admissions predictions.”>Yale University Admissions Statistics and Chances | Parchment - College admissions predictions.)

@harryloo: you should still apply early regardless of what that email said. btw i got the same email too.

haha ok…how true do you think that statement is?..i mean…if I get no benefit at all for doing their restrictive early then i minus well apply early at like hopkins or somehing (which almost tripples the chance)
