Any chance of ED decisions before 12/15?

I saw on another college’s board that they expect their ED decisions around 12/9. How about Amherst? Anyone have any experience with this?

I've been asking the same question. It appears that an earlier response will not be had! They apparently mail them out on the 15th. Best of luck!

Are you applying or your child? What major? My D applied ED as well, and we love the place.

My son. He loved it when he visited. The problem is that there are at least 4 other students from his school applying early as well, all very qualified. So, that is why we are sweating it. Good luck to your D as well.

Don't know if they applied ED or not, but I wouldn't worry about all the kids being from one school. The list of current freshmen shows 5 or 6 from 1 high school. It just depends on the kid. Diversity is important at Amherst, and I know you are worried that they might want more kids from other areas, but if it happened before...Good luck!!!!!!!!

On the Amherst website under admissions, it says that ED folder reviews begin Dec. 2. Doesn't give them much time, does it? I think they only receive about 300 ED apps, so maybe the process isn't that bad. I agree with evitajr1, don't sweat the number of kids from one school. If they are qualified, and appear to be a good fit, that's all that matters. Hey let's face it...Amherst is a reach for the vast majority of kids applying there. All depends what their looking for or what they need this year. Who knows. Good luck to your son.

The 5 kids last year came from my son's school. Can lightening strike twice? We are hoping for the best, but getting prepared for the thin envelope. I m trying to convince my son that there are other schools out there for him that he can learn to love. Isn't this similiar to dating?

BJM8 What other schools is your D considering?

If Amherst doesn't happen, she has other options:

Smith ED II
Brown
Tufts
Brandeis
Wellesley

She (we) really love the Amherst/Northampton area; here's hoping for the best. Pass the thick envelope please?

buuummmppp!

I'm apply Early Decision. Amherst was tied for my second choice before w/ Colgate, but after the Diversity Open House Weekend, Amherst College definitely became my first choice.

BJM8, at DIVOH, they said that the Early Decision process is a breeze. Two people read each application, if the two aren't on clear agreement the about admitting someone, then it's deffered.

They basically said that it's generally easy to accept someone from the Early Decision Pool. If you are a clear admit, then you are admitted. If there are any questions or concerns, they generally pass you on the the regular decision pool. After 20+ years of reviewing Amherst applications, one of them told me, he was pretty confident that he knew a good early decision applicant when he saw one.

BTW, There are 4 Early Decision applicants at my school, IMO only I and one other girl are qualified. The other two have 3.0-3.33 GPAs and SATs in the 1600 range, both great kids, but are simply taking a stab at ED b/c they think it's the only way they could possibly get in.

CRE8TIVE1, was that 1600 out of 2400?

BJM8, are they actually fat envelopes? I'll get the mail before my son gets home and I am hoping that I could tell from the size, otherwise it will be really hard to resist tearing it open! By the way, my son is also applying to Tufts if Amherst does not work out.

Cre8tive1: My son also went to DIVOH. That is what did it for him. After that, he decided to go ED. He was there the end of Sept. How about you?
It is interesting that you also like Colgate. Did you visit? My son gets a lot of mail from them, but I never encouraged him to visit, because I had the impression that it was a preppy/frat/drinking place.

Chammom, I really don't know about the fat envelopes. I think they send the decision fedex. My D is also looking at Tufts as well. Someone said that two admissions officers look over the ED apps and make a decision quite quickly. Guess they've been doing it for awhile, so if they both agree...the student gets in. If not...out go the other apps! Keep your fingers crossed.

BTW, that someone I referred to was Cre8tive1.

My daughter applied ED and received her letter in the mail today 12/10/2005

Where are you located?
When was the mail postmarked?

syracuse NY, postmarked 12-08

Thanks,
I hope it was a good news!

My D received hers today as well, she was unfortunatley deferred. Maybe if you haven't heard yet, a large envelope may be coming your way. Pretty sad around here though! :(
