I'm a junior in High School, my school is REALLY competitive, and I'm really interested in medicine. I have been volunteering at a hospital for the past two years and interned at a genetics lab. I play the piano and paint. Last year I competed through my school for a Family consumer science organization, made it all the way to nationals and got a gold medal. my gpa is a 3.96 unweighted and 5.12 weighted.

soph: AP World History (got a 3 on the exam, not very good :/ ), medical microbiology, PreAP Chem
Junior: AP Spanish, AP english, AP bio, AP us history, PreAP Pre-Cal, Biomedical, Lifetime nutrition

SAT/ACT and SAT2 scores are pretty important, so chancing is hard before then. GPA so far is probably high enough for every program. Your ECs look fine, you could try and find a doc to shadow or just add more community service if you want.

I shadowed a hospitalist for a little while…I’m in NHS, I used to volunteer at a library, and I do a different you know, volunteering thing wherever i am asked to for NHS.

In that case, really only standardized testing is left (it’s a big part of the application though, so starting to study now is probably worth it. You could also start taking SAT2s if you think your pre-AP classes prepared you well enough, waiting till the end of junior year might make it complicated. Essays don’t require that much preplanning and LoRs don’t come till much later.

first of all, you must be weighting your GPA wrong because AP/IB/honors courses count as 5. how the hell can you go above 5? that is simply impossible, and if your school does it some weird way, recalculate it so that it is the way everyone else does it.

we are missing a lot of information from you. you should aim for a 2200 on the SAT to be safe at every program, and you should get no less than 700’s on your SAT 2 tests. i personally would aim for 750’s.

in addition, it looks like you have zero medical experience so far. since you are applying to lock yourself into medical school, they want to know that you are aware of exactly what a career in medicine entails. the only way to do that is through medical volunteer experience. start hospital volunteering immediately and go find doctors to shadow.

Are you serious?? can you not read that I have volunteered at hospitals for three years and shadowed doctors, and yes my school does calculate GPA differently. we go on a scale of 6 for AP classes.

oh what the hell sorry about that. i replied to like 5 of these threads really fast.

your experience is pretty good with the volunteering + research combined. i would just aim for a high SAT score at this point and maybe shadow a few doctors (optional). you will have a good shot at many programs if you get a good score.

i don’t think AP scores matter much. just get good SAT 2 scores.
