My essay focuses on how being gay in my conservative hometown has affected me.

I feel like I have no chance at getting in. /:

i would say ur chance is 50%

^ That’s absurdly generous; his/her chances are more like 3-5% given the SAT score.

very slightly more than that because of amazing gpa and good extracurriculars
you’re not a minority student perchance, are you? or outstanding athlete?

Sadly, I’m not a minority. Well, I guess its how you look at it… in SOME ways I’m a minority because I’m from a very rural area and ivy’s in general do not get as many applicants from my type of upbringing as compared to those from the suburbs and private schools. gay=minority too? I’m pretty average in athletics like around 20 mins in my 5k’s and 5:30 in my mile. No offense to silverturtle but my 1330 SAT is within the 50 percentile.

Your CR score is below the 25% mark, and your writing score is well below. Did you take the ACTs?

Don’t worry about the AP classes, you are judged based on the courses offered at your school.

Your SATs are considered in context with your high school, socio-economic profile of your community and your parents’ education level. If you are from a state that Brown rarely gets applications from, then that is also a plus that might compensate for the scores.

Being gay is not a minority for Brown admissions.

I can see why you are worried because I, myself, am in the same delima. My test scores are not very “Brown” worthy. But, you must take into consideration that you are simply not just a number. Brown is the primary Ivy League that looks for unique qualities in a student’s application. Your personality (more so, your essay) can really patch up that sore spot. SAT is one huge wound on my application but do NOT leave you on loose strings. Your grades are perfect, you’re taking AP courses and your EC activities show that you have dedication in something. I’m a devoted band student as well and I am positive that musicians have high ambitions  Not to be bragging for us band geeks! haha!

Maybe you should consider writing something a little more personal. I know writing about a homophobic community may be important to you …but is it imporant to Brown? Think outside of the box. Think about writing something that may show all appeals. Use Pathos! Use ethos! Just write your heart out.

This is longer than I expected! I’m just in a motivational-boost mode. :]

BTW–By minority I think they ment race…sadly, that is a ticket stub to colleges and scholarships.
