Your GPA is right where it should be, but your ACT is slightly low, especially for a non-URM out of state student. As it stands, I'd say Michigan is a slight reach for you.

I agree with the slight reach assesment. I'd like to know your UM GPA though.

Here was a link to some stats of accepted students at Michigan last year, although this doesn't represent the entire accepted applicant population, it gives you a sense of what you need.

i think my UM gpa is a 3.9
also im planning on retaking act's in the fall. i know its better to apply early but should i wait until i get my results in the fall to apply or apply as early as possible and send my scores later?

Apply now and specify on your app when you're taking the ACTs again. Then, if they already think you're good enough, they'll accept you, but if not, they'll wait for the new scores.

Yes, apply as soon as you can and contact the university when you retake your ACT.

Yeah a 3.9 is almost guaranteed admission as long as your test scores fall in range, which they do.

does it matter which school i apply to?

This is how Michigan goes for out of state:

Rolling admissions, which is good because they process as you send in your app. If you apply later in the season, say December, most of the class has been filled so the out of state criterion for admission skyrockets. I know tons of kids who, because they applied from Ohio (i.e. outside Mich.) got rejected simply because there wasn't enough room. If you are serious about UMich, and it sounds as though you are, apply ASAP and rush your scores. You stand a lot better chance in Sept. than applying in January!

Yes, it matters which college you apply to. Apply to the college that has your chosen major. Transfering from Enginering to say LSA is not too difficult, but transfering from other colleges into LSA or Engineering is much more difficult and transfering from LSA to Engineering isn't a sure thing either.

Michigan does not accept rush scores.

DO NOT rush scores. It says it all over the application like a million times to not rush scores, they won't accept them at all.

I know people who got in with 27-28 ACT but they were in-state.

why do people instate get in with 27-28 on ACT but people OOS dont?

I didn't really mean "rush your scores" I guess I just meant get the tests taken as soon as possible. That being said, Michigan is a land grant institution, and by state law, needs certain quotas of Michigan residents. That is how the instate admissions requirements seem slightly lax.

excel. UM, being a public institution, has an obligation to educate the members of its own state (presumably the children of its taxpayers) before accepting anyone out of state. Therefore, it can be more lenient with applications in-state.
