I’m considering applying to Brown university and I was wondering if I have any chance at all. I graduate in 2012 from HS

My Stats:
3.62 cumulative GPA unweighted
2020 on the PSAT converted to SAT out of 2400 Taking SAT prep classes, hopefully my score will be in the 2100-2200

APs: Biology, European history, literature

1st term GPA: 4.2, 2nd term GPA (in progress): 4.25

Extra curriculars: I play basketball for my school and I play AAU bball as well, I’m 16, 6’5 and 195lbs. I am part of future business leaders of america club in school, I volunteer at my local YMCA, I have gone to the regional science fair twice; I have won over $500 total, planning to make it this year as well. I am planning to volunteer at a hospital over the summer and get involved at my church’s youth group that I am a part of.

I’ve taken multiple practice tests after that PSAT, and my score has stayed around that mark. Does anyone think I can get in or is it a lost cause?

It’s never a lost cause! Keep on going with your SAT prep to try to get your score up, and work hard in your classes. It’s way too early to tell you anything.

When will I be able to tell if I can get in or not for sure w/o actually applying, at the end of junior year or after the 1st marking period of senior year? Btw I plan on taking the Literature and biology SAT IIs, are there other things I should consider as well?

There is no point at which you can tell whether you’ll get in or not except after you receive your acceptance/rejection. The Brown admissions process is extremely holistic, so a lot of your admissions chances depend on your essays and things that cannot simply be looked at and decided.

Holistic is good I guess, but idk how I’m going to compete with the 35-40% of brown applicants that are ranked #1 or #2 in their class…

I was wondering how likely it is that I could get my GPA to the 50 percentile mark of a brown applicant that is accepted by the time I apply in my senior year…

Your grades are on track for Brown, keep up the good grades. SATs look good. You sound like a good basketball player and your height is a great help. Consider contacting Brown’s athletic department if you plan on playing in college, and play at some exposition games for college coaches. Your athletic skills will definitely help you get in. Do all of those ECs you said you would, and I think you’d have a good shot at Brown.

I am planning to go to the UPenn basketball camp, and maybe NYU’s. I would love to go to Brown’s camp, maybe if I go there for camp, I can also do a visitation… I have done research on Brown’s basketball program and its definitely not out of reach b/c all Ivy league athletes are technically walk ons, so I might have a chance. If I feel I am at a level where I can play college, I will fill out a recruiting form for brown b/c they are pretty simple. Ideally, I’ll have another 100hrs of community service/volunteering through YMCA and hospital volunteering and my GPA should be in the 50 percentile range, and my class rank should hopefully be top 10% (at least). Its gonna take a lot of hard work.
