Any CHANCES?

Hi, I am a senior and I am trying to apply to Penn State U, Purdue, Michigan State, Pitt in 3 days

Here is some information about myself
- Living in PA for about 5 years
- Cumulative GPA 3.22 out of 4 (Weighted)
- SAT CR 480 MATH 770 W 560
- Varsity Football for two years
- Current Captain for the team
- Key Club member for two years
- Taking AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1

Also, is it better to apply as an undecided major or Engineering (either civil or mechanical)

Thank you

Total SAT score is 1810 btw

I think that all of those schools are reaches, despite your strong Math score. The Engineering schools are especially competitive. As a PA resident, you have a shot at Penn State. Temple is a little less selective, and you would still get in-state tuition, so I suggest giving them a try. If you’re prepared to pay the out-of-state tuitions at Michigan State or Purdue, you might try West Virginia or Iowa - they’re a little less selective.

All these schools are reaches. Penn State University Park is not within reach (according to the bubble chart you’d need at least 3.4 and +100 on the SAT), Michigan State and Pitt are going to frown on the CR 480 and the lowish weighted GPA, and Purdue will likely offer you engineering technology, not engineering. However you have a shot at a branch campus and you can put Behrend/Erie as your first choice since they have engineering there.
Don’t apply to Engineering at these schools at the very least because your math score and STEM rigor sound good but your overall profile wouldn’t be competitive (for Penn State Engineering, you’d need closer to a 3.8-4 weighted, for instance; a 3.2 does not make you competitive for engineering even with a 2200…)

For Engineering or Engineering Technology, look at Bloomsburg, CalU, Edinboro, IUP, Gannon, Messiah.
Temple and Penn College of Technology would be excellent choices.

Thank you so much, I talked to my sister who is currently attending Purdue University and she told me that most people choose undecided for their major.

Is there any disadvantage to take Engineering class after taking freshman courses?
