Any changes in WUE for a Fall 2020 start? I saw the minimum GPA at WSU increased from 3 to 3.4!

@thedreamydaisy Yes, she is definitely considering UNR (forgot to mention that in the last post). She had UNR as her first choice for a while, and we were thrilled when she improved her SAT to 1100, which qualified her for about $8k/yr on their “Nevada Advantage First-time Freshman” program. But then she said she might prefer Southern California. But then we saw UNR again and she seemed to like it. UNR has a beautiful campus, and she knows we go to Tahoe often to ski.

@Darcy123 We saw CSU, Fort Collins in January. The campus and the downtown were nice, but she just wasn’t in love with it. It seemed pretty far from the ski resorts on I-70, and it was 0 degrees when we visited. At the tour, they said the COA was $47k, and even if she got up to a 1130 SAT, they would only knock off $5k. https://financialaid.colostate.edu/scholarships-for-entering-non-resident-freshman/
Overall, she may apply, but its not her top choice.

@twoinanddone
LOL! Let’s agree that $24.5k - $7k = either $14.5k or $17.5k

@Sybylla Thanks, yes she applying this summer and fall to begin in Fall 2020. She is taking AP Biology her senior year. (That’ll be her first AP) She knows not everyone gets into Vet school, but she says she’ll be happy in a Vet tech job or any job working with animals. She seems to like her volunteer job at the Animal Shelter.

She also took a number of Physical Therapy classes as electives in High School, and understands more medical concepts and medical facts than I do. So, if AS does not work out for her, she’ll probably go for a biology degree that is related to animals such as Zoology or Wildlife Biology

Sorry, I guess I was thinking of the $10k the award used to be or the $21.5k that OOS tuition used to be. But if you don’t think it’s the right school, it doesn’t matter.

But speaking of numbers…Some of the WUE schools are pretty competitive for the award. Wyoming gives out very few of them, and a 1100 SAT wouldn’t be competitive. I don’t think it would work at Colorado State either.

And no, Ft. Collins isn’t close to ski areas. She might want to look at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction.

it seems to me that you really need to have a very strict budgetary guideline conversation with your kid and see that merit $$ may just not be a thing, or WUE might not be on offer in her stats range. I don’t recall your budget? This college tour thing, is it about just seeing what you could get that matches a CSU cost?

@twoinanddone Thanks, we’ll have to look into Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction.

Col St Fort Collins has a COA of $47k, and even if she did do really great on the Aug. SAT, they’d only knock off about $5k to $8k, which still makes it about $40k, which is still really steep considering that most CSU’s have a COA of $20k-$25k

U of Wyoming wants a 1300 SAT for full WUE, but they’ll give her $6k off for her current 3.6/1100. http://www.uwyo.edu/admissions/scholarships/non-residents/wue.html That doesn’t sound like much, but UW’s COA is only $29k, which brings it down to $23k, which makes it competitive with a CSU http://www.uwyo.edu/sfa/cost-of-attendance/

@Sybylla
Budget is about $30k for COA, which would allow all of the CSU (California). UCs are a bit more (about $36k), which we would try to afford, but D’s chances of getting in are really slim to none, so we’re not seriously considering these.

So, yeah, this college tour thing is it about just seeing what we could get that matches a CSU cost. There’s only 4 of 23 CSU’s with Animal Science (CP SLO, CP Pomona, Chico, and Fresno), and she’s only seriously considering CP Pomona and Fresno, which is only 2 schools, and it is possible she’ll get into neither. Thus, the WUE schools are sortof a backup plan, but also to see what she could get versus a CSU.

Wyoming doesn’t cost that much. Housing and COL in Laramie is pretty cheap. It has very good ag and animal programs.

We never paid close the to estimated COA.

It’s not a WUE school, but I’m going to throw out Kansas State University. They have an animal science major and a vet school. They also have a lower COA and they can be very generous with financial aid. They might be competitive with a CSU … but, definitely not close to skiing and it can get cold.

^^ Agree about Kansas State! They can be very competitive. Our cost ended up being the same as a TX in state and housing was actually cheaper. Son is animal science major. They also have an early admit to vet school program which is very good. He was accepted at CSU but even with the scholarship the price couldn’t come close.

My son loves to ski and they did have a spring break trip to CO. They also get their fix by short trips to ski a tiny hill north of Kansas City! Who would have thought?

@twoinanddone Thanks! We saw U Wy in January. It was cold, but D seemed to like what she’s seeing. Also, Laramie is a nice little town, although we only had time to visit the old coffee shop by the railroad tracks. UW is somewhere on her list. It’s likely she’ll apply there.

@csfmap Thanks, we’ll have to look into KSU. Is the Animal Science at the Manhattan Campus or the Polytechnic Campus, Salina?

^^ Animal Science and the vet school are at the main campus in Manhattan. Great little town and easy drive into Topeka or Kansas City for your larger city fix. My son goes to concerts or sports events there every month or so. They surprisingly have lots of good concerts and lectures in Manhattan.

@momocarly Thanks, I was trying to remember if KSU was the school with the early admit to vet program. Looks like the school has great reviews on niche. We probably won’t have time to see the campus this year, but maybe I’ll have D apply and if she gets in, this could be “one of the schools that we didn’t get a chance to see” for a spring visit next year.

Also, thanks for clarifying that its the Manhattan campus

@Twoin18 I came across this article from 2002, https://www.deseretnews.com/article/515035274/The-cost-of-college.html where they changed the residency requirement from 1 year to 60 units (about 2 years): “In 2002 the Legislature increased the residency requirement — the length of time nonresident students have to live here to qualify for in-state tuition — from one year to 60 credit hours, basically two years. As a result, many students chose not to come to Utah, negating the anticipated $5 million tuition increase.” I guess they changed it back to the “one year rule” sometime after 2002. Hopefully they learn from their history!

University of New Mexico has an animal science department. We found the costs to be lower there than the CSUs.

@GusGus5 Thanks! We’ll have to look into UNM!

Just did a drive through of U of Utah. Really nice campus in the foothills. With the medical center, this place is huge! The stadium is hugh too.

Just did a quick walk around Weber State in Ogden Utah. Nice campus up against the Wasatch mountains. On an incline, but not too hilly. The place looks brand new. A lot of classrooms have glass walls, one that gives you a great view of Starbucks! Didn’t seem to be too many dorms. Downtown Ogden is one of the best small towns I have ever seen!
