Any College Suggestions for Computer Science?

I’m looking for some colleges that have acknowledgeable computer science programs. I’ve done some research but every college I bring up my parents have some sort or problem with. The only one they’ve accepted so far is U of M (I live in Michigan). We are willing to pay a considerable amount for college, but would need a scholarship for the more prestigious ones like Carnegie and Stanford.
My ACT is a 32
My GPA unweighted is a 3.98
I have s lot of EC’s that are very diverse and interesting.
I also take all AP and honors classes offered at my school.

So if anyone could recommend a school I could research and hopefully get my parents to approve I would be very appreciative. Thank you!

Apply to UMichigan as early as you can… if you get in in the fall, then you only need to apply to a handful of other schools… Michigan is in the top 20 for CS… so you should feel very fortunate that you live in a state for which your public flagship has such an outstanding program.

If you get into Michigan, then there is no point in applying to more than half a dozen reaches to see if you win the lottery. Here are the elite private schools that are also in the top 25 for CS:

These are super-elite overall as well as the top of the heap for CS (ranked in top 10):
Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Stanford, Cornell, Princeton

These are super-elite overall with very strong computer science (ranked in top 25):
Columbia, Harvard, Penn, Brown, Rice, USC, Yale, Duke

Again, I’ve excluded public schools because, honestly, there is no point applying to another public when your in-state option is Michigan.

^ Though unsourced, those appear to be graduate department rankings, and therefore omit exclusively undergraduate-focused colleges. Excellent smaller colleges with good CS departments should be researched as well, @Emminey.

Michigan has 2 computer science programs as far as applications are concerned - one through CoE and the other through LSA. They are essentially identical but each college has different requirements for core, so I’d look carefully and decide which works for you.

It is also easier to transfer from Engineering to LSA. If you are female you also might have some advantage applying to CoE.

I’ve heard CoE stats are higher though. Also my ECs seem like they might be more helpful if I apply LSA. Do you think I would have more luck applying to CoE though? @TooOld4School

@harvardandberkeley I don’t believe I’ll be applying to too many reach schools due to the price/highstats required. Also, I am very thankful U of M has a great program and would love to go there. But if I’m not fortunate enough to, do you know of any ‘safety’ schools with good programs that might supplement?

I would also check out Udub (University of Washington) and UCSD (San Diego).

A ‘match’ rather than a safety, but you would likely be eligible for good merit aid at the University of Rochester.

UCSD will not be affordable for OOS… UC schools are notoriously stingy with financial aid for OOS applicants.

Some other strong schools to consider: U Rochester, Case Western, Lehigh, Northeastern.

If you like smaller college then consider Harvey Mudd college. Here is article from Silicon Valley Business Journal telling The top 10 colleges that fuel the Silicon Valley. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2013/12/17/the-top-10-colleges-that-fuel-the.html?page=all

how much will they pay per year…ask them

what is your home state

If so, then ask your parents if THEY will pay $53k per year for a UC? Or a similar high price for UWash? None of those schools will give you scholarships.

How much is UMich instate? $35k? more? less?

Since you’ve taken AP courses, then you’ll be at “junior level” soon…paying the higher tuition at UMich.

@mom2collegekids, it says right in the post that the OP is from Michigan.

Yes, I saw that right after I posted and corrected. I had been reading another one of her posts that said something that made me think she lived in Toledo. I think she may live near Toledo, but on MI side.

My parents will not pay prices similar to Carnegie or ivy league which is usually 40-60 I believe. Michigan is in our range but I would need to be eligible for merit scholarships if I wanted to apply to places with higher tuition. @mom2collegekids
Also what is junior level? I am an incoming senior but I don’t believe my grade is what you’re referring too. Sorry if I come across clueless.

Thank you! @bambi0611

Thank you for all the suggestions! @bambi0611 @harvardandberkeley @hs2015mom @boolaHI @merc81 @TooOld4School

I thought the instate COA for UMich is closer to $26K-28K?. OP, @harvardandberkeley gave you excellent advice.

UMich has two tiers of tuition, and they count AP and similar credits. So, an incoming frosh who comes in with 45 credits from AP or whatever, will have “junior standing” and be charged “upper division” credits after the first semester…once the student has more than 55 credits.

The tuition is about $4k more per year, once a student has 55 credits (including AP, etc).

UM in-state tuition is $16-$20K including tuition, fees, books, etc… UM estimates $12.5K for living and personal expenses. Your GPA is excellent, but you are a little on the low side for CoE ACT (median is 33) . What is your math sub-score? If you could re-take the ACT (Sept & Oct tests are OK for early admission) and get in the 33-35 range you should be fine.

Make sure to apply EA for best chance.
