I would go too far off on a tangent if I discussed the GPA and what it may or may not truly represent, so I won’t do it. But I do agree that, when it comes to those who read all of those college applications, they certainly put a lot of weight on the GPA, so every student needs to be aware of that. The good news is that if every high school student earned half As and half Bs, they would end up with unweighted GPAs of 3.5. The more As the better, of course, and more of those As need to be in academic core classes, not in PE. A 3.5 is definitely in reach of college-minded students, and there are scholarship opportunities available. It is not 4.0 or bust, and that is good news :)

Much higher stats would be required for the Presidential Scholarship at Agnes Scott.

be wary of having your D accept a full ride where the school is mostly commuter/suitcase, and you live far from that school. Also, be wary of schools where your D’s test scores are rare. At Jacksonville State, a commuter college, only 4% of students have an ACT 30 or higher. 58% of the school has an ACT of 23 and below.

@ BobWallace: “Much higher stats would be required for the Presidential Scholarship at Agnes Scott.”

I don’t disagree with that assessment; but the Agnes Scott website was rather opaque about what stats would be necessary.

Just curious, @mom2collegekids, as we are looking this year and you last year…where did your daughter go? Does she like it?
I don’t have daughters. My sons went to Alabama and received very large merit scholarships there for their stats.
They both loved and love the school.

Ah! Sorry, I meant to ask @4all4girls … Where did your D go, and does she like it?
Oops! Meant @4all4girls
