Im hoping to graduate from college debt free and attend medical school, so out of state schools like Alabama and Kentucky are great b/c i have a decent shot at getting full tuition and a decent education. I only recently found out about Kentucky's Otis A. Singletary Scholarship and am wondering if i would be competitive for it and how are the academics at UK. Im majoring in Engineering. From what ive heard UK is not quite as good as Alabama, but it might offer a full ride instead of only Full tuition.

White Male from NC

If i could get a full ride at UK,and then get a good GPA would that set me up for medical school acceptances.

This is my second post this week so sorry for all the trouble, but thanks so much for all the great help.

D had a good friend from her high school class that got a Singletary with similar stats. However, she is in-state. I am a UK alum - if you love basketball it's the place to be.

Or if you love racehorses. The area is beautiful.

If you have a good GPA AND do well on the MCAT, you will be in good shape for medical school admissions. My son in law just graduated from medical school (UTexas) and I went to his graduation. MANY of his classmates came from undergraduate schools that would not be considered "worthy" on this forum, and they got into a good medical school, graduated from it and landed excellent residencies.

Ditto on doing well at any undergrad college/university to get into a medical school. Choose your college based on where you want to be- for all of the factors, as well as affordability and academics. You will do best in an environment you like. Also consider that many would be premeds change their minds along the way so pick a school with the coursework you want, not merely as a stepping stone to medical school. I notice you are from NC- excellent school instate, why not make use of the academics there, a good preparation regardless of your future. Do not ignore a good institution for fear of the competition, if you are medical school material you will be able to do well and reach your goals.

hey i live in kentucky and i would recommend you consider u of k or university of louisville. i know that they both have really good medical programs and are actually not bad schools at all. i was going to go to uni of louisville (premed) but i decided i did not want to stay in state. depending on where you are from it may be a little different in terms of things to do and stuff but overall i would recommend you going to either of these schools if you are trying to save money.

B.S./M.D. Program | University of Kentucky College of Medicine They have a seven year BS to MD program too.

Competition for the merit scholarships is stiff because there aren't that many relative to the size of the class, but it is certainly worth a shot. From what I've seen with past winners they like LEADERS - so if you have good EC that would be a help.
