Any current International Comparative Studies majors?

How are classes/professors/etc. for ICS majors at Duke? I'm having a hard time deciding between Poli Sci at Berkeley as a regent scholar and ICS/possibly Poli Sci at Duke....

I’d love to hear this too. I’m probably doing Qnt Econ and ICS at Duke.

@ jshim92, Duke has some of the best Romance language departments in the country (usually overall considered to be #2 behind Yale), and as a result has a strength in European history and ICS (many language profs are also ICS/PS profs). I know that Duke is very strong in Poli Sci and in the most recent FP rankings Duke was 12th(?) in Undergraduate IR. Both are very strong programs, and honestly it is the other factors (location, student body composition/type, $, future career ambitions (East vs West)) which you should base your decision off of. I choose Duke over Berkeley, but I’m also not you. If you have any questions or want to know more about why I chose D over B, just msg me. :)

I’m not an ICS major but I considered doing it and many of my friends are. ICS is a nice major (especially as a second major) because it’s extremely flexible. You pick a region and you can take courses in pretty much any discipline that relate back to your region. I’d say the biggest positive is this flexibility. On the negative side, there isn’t an ICS department - all ICS courses are cross-lists taught in other departments. That means you can shop around and take courses all over the place but you aren’t going to have the same type of support that you might get if you were in a major that has a department. Also on the negative side, ICS 125 (the gateway course to the major) is an incredible waste of time. It’s easy at least. After 125 though it’s a great major, and honestly a lot of majors at Duke have difficult or frustrating introductory courses and get better thereafter.

Thanks cameroncrazy

any ICS majors out there???
