Hey, current MCB student at Cal. I'm having trouble picking out my first semester schedule at Berkeley, any suggestions?

chem1A, math1A (or 1B or 53 or whatever) should be on that list. if you want you can also take physics 8A, and add some other courses that get rid of breadth.

I was wondering... is there possibly anyway to sub physics 8A for physics 7a?

Also, which teachers do you suggest?

for Chem 1A I head either- Head-Gordon, or Kubinec

What about for Physics 8A? Math 1B?

of course you can take physics 7A instead of physics 8A, but beware - the 7 series is intended for physics jocks and engineers, whereas the 8 series is intended for pre-meds or people who don't want to deal with harder, more in-depth physics. if you want a good challenge though, by all means, go for it.

Next fall, the only prof teaching chem1A is Alex Pines, if I'm not mistaken. From what I've heard, he's not too bad. Some people say that they didn't learn jack crap from his class though, others say that he's a smooth lecturer (whatever the hell that means). I had Kubinec last fall, and he was all right. A tad smarmy and he's got a bit of an 80's porn star moustache thing going on, but generally a good lecturer. Final exam was hard as hell though.

When should I start taking biology classes? Btw, I'm MCB major trying to major in biology.

You can take Bio 1B any time, but before you take Bio1A you must take Chem1A, 3A and 3B (3B can be taken concurrently with Bio1A). So...one of the most common tracks taken is this: Fall1 - Chem1A, math1A; Spring1 - Chem3A, math1B; Fall2 - Chem3B, Physics8A, Spring 2 - Bio1A, maybe physics8B, maybe MCB102.

meh im MCB and I'm doing fpf program. I'm taking math1a,antro 1, englishr1a, and psychology 1, but i plan on trying to transfer into bioE though.

I have to take Bio1A or Bio1B? Is Bio1A that hard, that it requires chem?

If you want to major in MCB, you have to take both Bio1A and Bio1B. I haven't taken the course yet, but evidently Bio1A is pretty difficult at Cal. It's not supposed to be like AP Bio where we got by without much external knowledge of chemistry. Bio1A is supposed to be tough.
