Any current pre-med SMU students here???

Hello,
Does anyone consider the ranking of the school when deciding where to attend? I got into SMU, great scholarship, interview for Presidential, but got into some other top schools ranked 30 and higher. I really like SMU and my friends think I am nuts. I love that the professors are easy to understand, willing to help, and the campus is beautiful. But I am pre-med and concerned it may not look as strong on my resume when I do apply to med schools. Can anyone provide some insight?
How can I find the percentage of applicants/acceptances from SMU into med schools?

Hey baggirl! I know this doesnt answer your question at all but I would really appreciate it if you answered this. What are your stats? i was really hoping to get the PS interview but I didnt :frowning: I think the reason why is because SMU is trying to attract kids who would go to ivy leagues or big schools and have the stats to match it, and althought my stats are good, they defintly aren’t good for a top school…Do you mind telling me yours :)

SMU has a strong, competitive sciences department that has great relationships with Texas med schools, including our neighbor - UT Southwestern. All of our pre-med students are assigned their own pre-med advisor (in addition to their academic advisor) to ensure they are taking all the required courses for med school, as well as important deadlines for applications, testing, et cetera. While it’s difficult to get an accurate number of what percentage of SMU students get into medical school (not all students matriculate in who are accepted and we have students from lots of different departments/colleges applying to medical school because of our pre-med track), our acceptance rate is about 20 points higher than the national average.

Rankings do matter - they’re a great cursory way to determine the quality of a school. But what matters more than rankings is how you feel about a school. You said you really liked SMU but your friends think you’re crazy… well, your friends aren’t the ones who have to make the decision about your life - it’s completely up to you! If a school feels right and you could see yourself being successful and happy there, that should matter more than a ranking system that can’t quantify those kinds of things!

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for your replies, it helps a lot. I would love to hear from some per med students currently attending.
