Application was submitted this weekend and school will be sending over the rest of the required documents today or tomorrow. It's my S's top choice.

Just wondering who else applied or will be applying and if there are any current SJU students on the board?

My son is currently a freshman in the PharmD program, Queens campus. I’ll be happy to answer whatever questions I can. This forum is frequently inactive. Not sure why.

Does your S commute or dorm? We have decided that my S would dorm and are wondering if SJU is still primarily a commuter school as it was when my SIL was a student. Also any info on campus activities and school spirit would be great. How is your S doing? Is he happy with his college choice? Thanks!

My son dorms, even though we live a little over an hour away from campus. This semester, his last class ends after 8:30, so for me, it’s peace of mind knowing he isn’t coming home on public transportation or driving back at night.

A lot of students do go home on the weekends, since most of them seem to come from NJ, Long Island or the five boroughs. There’s usually something going on around campus, although I’ve heard they aren’t always very good about promoting all their activities. There are opportunities for community service, which the school is very big on, and sports is a big deal, too, especially the basketball team. The pep rally they had to open the season was packed with students.

They do try to promote school spirit every chance possible. For orientation, the students received so many free things, all with the school’s logo. Even the parents received free items. For every event or activity you participate in during the school year, you receive points. At the end of spring semester, you can trade those points in for merchandise. Even their waffles (you make your own) have the SJU logo on it. I’ve seen the photo on their Facebook page.

My son adjusted to college life a lot quicker than I thought he would, which made my life easier. He’s my youngest and it was hard to let him go. He seems content with his choice and is doing well in his classes. In all honesty, there’s a lot of things I don’t love about the school, but then again, I don’t love everything about the SUNY school my older son attends. But I figure as long as they’re okay with where they are, then it’s all good :)

Thanks so much for all that! This is my youngest as well and we are also about an hour away. I don’t mind having him home once in a while but I don’t want him coming home every weekend bc campus clears out and he’s bored! Its good to know there are things to do and my S would be interested in them!

I’m sure we will have many more questions in the coming months but right now we just have to wait and see what the admissions decision is. Best of luck to your S! :)

I am from Kentucky and visited St. John’s and Fordham University over my fall break. St. John’s is definitely still a big commuter school, but the way their dorms are set up is nice. All of the dorms are in a village (as they like to call it) and are all near one another. So while there are less kids that dorm, the kids that do are all close to one other.
I talked to current students though and they said that there are still plenty of activities for students who do live on campus. I spoke to a few commuter students and they all said that SJU really tries to get their commuter students involved with school activities.
However, Fordham is still my top choice. I just hope I get accepted! If I’m correct, Fordham and St. John’s both start sending out admission letters in December. Let’s say some prayers we all get accepted!

My oldest S is a Senior at Fordham and their forum is very active for any questions you might have! S2 also applied but didn’t make the EA deadline.

We love Fordham but really like St. John’s for the younger guy! Just a little disappointing more people aren’t talking about it here!

My S applied in early November and right before Thanksgiving he received a congratulatory email letting him know that he was accepted and would receive his official acceptance letter and possible scholarship in early December. We haven’t gotten that yet.

Are you sure they have all the required documents? If so, then don’t worry about it. I’m sure you will have a decision by January just like they said. It really only took about two weeks for my S to get a decision once they had all the documents but they might have different procedures for reviewing international applicants. Good luck! :)
