Any Current Students/Parents

Could any current students/parents answer some questions about the program for me please? :)

Clay - you should PM teriwtt. Her D is a sophomore in Theatre/Vocal Perfomance. My D and I met her and Charlie Richter last summer when we visited.

You could PM any questions to me, though as a transfer student parent (one year under her belt) I don't know how much help I would be!

I'd also be willing to help and answer Qs, though my D is still in her freshman year, so I can provide perspective on only that. Please feel free to contact me via email, rather than PM.

Clay= feel free to PM me also. My D is a junior...studying abroad this semester (in Sydney). It is sometimes difficult for me to reach her because of the time difference, but I am happy to help with general info.

claydavisdbc - there are some wonderful people on here who can answer questions. I know when D2 was going through the process, I used anothermom-w-q as a resource. I think one of the perspectives we both bring is that both of our daughters came to Muhlenberg from quite a ways away, as opposed to being east coasters.

I'm willing to answer any questions; just PM me. I'm a freshman at Muhlenberg.

My D has an audition at Muhlenberg soon and she hopes for a career as a musical theater performer. I’ve heard lots of great things about Muhlenberg, including the fact that students interested in MT can get the training they need to work in MT. I understand that Muhlenberg doesn’t have a MT program but you can earn a BA in Theater with a concentration in acting or performance. But, I have been looking at their website for the curriculum for this program. As far as the 12 courses required in the major, I’m seeing lots of liberal arts (theater history, literature, philosophy…). But very little by way of actual training in acting, voice, dance. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right place. Or maybe this program is not what we’re looking for. Do they offer weekly private voice lessons (without an additional fee)? Is there room in the general education requirements to include some dance, music, drama courses?

If you declare a music major, the lesson fee is waived, and you can take as many dance classes as you wish that you can fit into your schedule. My D is actually a music major, and is not taking acting courses this year.
You can double major in music and theatre, and add the dance classes you wish. And she usually takes 5 or 6 classes a semester, between choir, dance classes, voice and guitar lessons and her GE classes.

Is it true as was mentioned on another thread that you can’t take acting classes your first year?

anothermom-w-q, do you just declare a music major or do you have do a special audition for it?

To answer Gwen Fairfax’s question first- There is a class for freshmen that includes some acting components. It is a survey course, and I don’t recall the name. My D took it her freshman year, and I know she did scenes in it. I believe it also covered a history of theatre. I think it was a writing intensive class. The core acting courses are not available until sophomore year.

Vksmom- You can declare any major you wish. There are juries every year for music majors, I don’t know if they cut people from it. If you are looking for a BM in music you will not get that. It is clearly a BA in music. If you look on the music department website you can get more info and see what classes are required.

Several of my D’s friends who are MT performers are either double majors in Theatre and another discipline, such as Anthropology or Music and English. Other combine Music and Theatre. Again, it is not a conservatory, so there is more flexibility to take outside classes, in fact they are required. There is a religion requirement, and you have to take math if you don’t pass out having done well on AP exams.

Speaking of writing intensive classes, even dance classes have writing requirements. I feel like the school takes it’s mission to create critical thinkers very seriously.

There is scholarship money available for those that do audition for the music department.

Oh, and there are at least 5 acapella groups on campus, as well as college choir and chamber singers. There is also a renaissance music group with singers as well as instrumentalists.

Hope that helps…

thank you-- it does help…

that freshman class is Theatre & Society. You do have to do a scene, but it’s not really an acting course… Freshmen CAN take Intro to the Art of Acting, which is an acting class for non-majors (they also recommend it if you haven’t had any previous formal training). I didn’t take it, but I have a couple friends who did and they liked it a lot.

All performance concentration theatre majors take Acting I, Acting II, a directing course, and a choice of two upper-level acting classes, such as Commedia Dell’Arte and Classical Verse. The department also offers special courses; last semester they had Acting the Song and this semester there’s a MT Audition Workshop. Also there’s Stage Combat- every semester is a different topic (this semester is Broadsword… I really wanted to take it but I think a broadsword is bigger than me).
