My S got a call at 6pm here in the Northeast. Def. took the sting away from the deferral earlier this week...

So I've been reading this thread for the last week to try to figure out when we would get called. I got the call earlier today while driving and figured I might as well get an account. My last name starts with H and I live in LA.

Phaedrus -- Where do you go to school? I'm from around L.A. too.

Got the call yesterday. I've been reading this thread for some time, but never talked. Last name S, pacific northwest, boarding school in New England. Got the call at home.

... I'd say there's no pattern.

And yes, I'm also shocked at how lucky the CC creepers are.

Anybody know what the stage 2 app looks like? How many / how long are the essays?

The only thing to go off of for this year's round two process is last year's:

I go to North Hollywood High School and live in Burbank

Over the past months, I have very much enjoyed following all of your posts, but have refrained from posting myself, in fear of raising my hopes any higher. But I join the conversation today with the news that Nathan Garrett has just called me!
Since last night I have been trying to cope with the fact that my DS aspirations were ending, so this call has come as an enormous relief!
My last name begins with a G, and I live in upstate New York. If there is a pattern in the calling order, I do not recognize it. So, for those still waiting, don't give up yet!
Congratulations to everyone, and I hope to see you in the desert.

The Desert Winds

The Desert Winds, they have blown
a distant valley’s wet sand
so: life’s secrets better be known.

In this moment, I’m alone
for sweeping over the land
the desert winds. They have blown

a sigh. A Faustian groan.
Aspirations not as planned
so life’s secrets better be known?

Is the future told in stone
unchanging, a cattle brand,
the desert winds—they have blown

uncertainty, all bemoan.
Might one join that offbeat band
so life’s secrets better be known

by odd means I can condone,
choices I don’t understand?
The Desert Winds, they have blown
so life’s secrets better be known.

A friend was kind enough to point out that the rhythm and meter was horrendous (even for a villanelle) and suggested this reworking. Thanks Alex.

The Desert Winds have blown
A distant valley's sand.
Life's secrets have been sown.

This moment, I'm alone
For sweeping o'er the land
The desert winds have blown

A sigh, a Faustian groan.
Ambitions not as planned
Life's secrets have been sown.

The future's told in stone
Static, a cattle brand,
The desert winds have blown

The doubt we all bemoan.
Might I join the offbeat band?
Life's secrets have been sown

Strangely. Can I condone
A choice not from my hand?
The Desert Winds have blown;
Life's secrets have been sown.

Brian/ Alex, this is beautiful...

Anyone know how many people go on to Round II? If we go of the fact that around a hundred or so people applied, does that mean its been split in half? or is it less than that, maybe twenty?

Agreed. Lovely poem, bdmoore. I just wish that I had a knack for understanding poems; I feel as if I don't grasp what the poet is trying to say most of the time, so I just relegate myself to the most superficial layer: the pretty words, scenery, etc.

I believe around ~40 people are invited to Round 2, and then ~15 are accepted overall.

Okay, so if forty people are passed on to Round II, and packs of four people visit the college for about four days, the college has ten batches of four visitors each attending over a span of forty days. A bit over a month is spent purely on interviewing. That's a lot of time that the school takes out its schedule to vet the incoming class.

Poetry is also not my shtick. I completely bombed an poetry-analysis essay in English today. :)

Someone should make a round II CC post and/or Facebook group so that we can keep in line with tradition.

Bdmoore, you're quite a poet; both versions were very moving.

I think that the emphasis Deep Springs places on selecting each year's freshman class is wonderful (although I don't think they will be taking the time out of their schedule). The student body is one of the greatest attractions to the school, for me.

Are all of you guys seniors in high school?

Oddly enough, my grandparents live near deep springs. when i told them that i was applying, they decided to visit the school one afternoon. They told me that the students' age ranges from 18 to 25.

It intimidates me to think that there may be applicants who have 4+ years of life experience and wisdom than a high school senior like myself.

So, who here ended up getting in? I am merely curious, because the level of intellect that a few of the posters here posses is impressive.
