Any down side to selecting a college for college sponsored NM scholarships?

My son is deciding whether or not to designate Boston University (BU), as one of the two schools (BU and American University) he has applied to that offer NM scholarships, as his first choice for a college sponsored NM scholarship. If he does designate BU, does that change his chances at all of receiving one of the $2,500 NM scholarships? He has also applied for the BU Presidential scholarship and BU Trustee scholarship. Will his National Merit Scholarship choice have any impact on his chanced for receiving these other BU scholarships? Thank you for any insights.

First choice college has no effect on the awarding of $2500 NMSC scholarships.

I doubt naming BU as “first choice” would impact. BU probably won’t be told that they are “first choice” until after May 1, because until then a student can change his mind about first choice.

However, if the school knows that he’s a NMF then likely they know that if he chooses to attend BU, that he’ll get that NMF scholarship (how much is that?) and that may influence what other award he might get.
