Any downside to not sending SAT scores

Probably been asked to death but my son just got his ACT scores and they are much better that his SAT scores. Is there any possible reason he should submit his SAT scores?

SAT
700R
740M
650W
6 essay

ACT
Comp 35
Eng 35
Math 34
Reading 34
Science 35
Comb Eng/Writing 31
8 essay

Thanks!

No reason, except perhaps if it is required.

I’d submit them. It won’t be to his detriment that they see his SAT is lower. Who knows, maybe 740 math is higher than 34 in their mind. It won’t hurt him, it never should.

He will also be sending in his subject tests 800 Math II and 800 Chem if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Yeah it does, send them.

I think you should send them with a good reading and math score on sat can be helpful. So are those sat subject tests

I did some further research checking the admissions data on the schools he is applying to, and the ACT score for all of them is above the middle 50%, but not quite for the SATs. So since none of his schools prohibit score choice, I think he will just send his ACT scores and his Subject Test scores. I guess being from the Northeast it just feels weird not to send the regular SAT scores. We really want to try to maximize merit aid, so I’m scared of making a mistake here.

You need to check a couple things, one of which you appear to have already done:

Do the colleges to which he is applying accept score choice? If yes, you are OK.

Does the college require SAT IIs and if so is it one of the colleges that accepts the ACT in lieu of both the SAT and SAT IIs. There are colleges like Yale that accept ACT in lieu of both SAT and SAT IIs and consider those entirely separate evaluations in that if you submit ACT, SAT IIs will not be considered at all. To have SAT IIs considered you must submit the SAT. Thus, you need to know whether any of the colleges are like that.

A different issue is whether it hurts to submit all scores. The answer, if colleges are to be believed, is no. In determining admission when you submit SAT and ACT, colleges uniformily profess that they use the test they believe is the higher, and that includes for consideration on merit aid with the exception that the National Merit Scholarship is purely an SAT (and PSAT) related scholarship.

Thanks, I think only two of his schools recommend subject tests, but none of them require them. He took them just in case he did apply to a school that needed them. And he did so well on them it seems a shame not to send them, that’s what is making the decision hard. I guess I am just looking for reassurance that they do indeed consider the highest score.

I’d send the ACT + SATII scores too. Just my .02.
