Any EA likely letters?

I was just wondering if Harvard sends any likely letters ea.

Yes they do on occasion

EA? No. This is probably because you already find out in only 45 or so days; likely letters wouldn't be necessary.

what is a "likely letter"?

It's essentially when the admissions officer who reads your file feels that you're such a strong applicant that you would definitely be accepted when it came time for the entire admissions committee to meet and discuss your application. The admissions officer presents your app. to the Dean of Admissions and, if s/he approves it, you're sent a letter a month or two early essentially saying that you're in.

Dartmouth does it; so do Harvard, Yale, and UPenn. NYU has something similar.

It's cool because, well besides the obvious, you are also put in contact with your admissions officer early on, and given the opportunity to talk to them and ask them a lot of questions about the school that you might not normally get to ask so far in advance.

Also, some come with "fringe benefits." At Penn, likely letters sometimes come with nominations for the Ben Franklin program, a cool research opportunity. NYU's form of a "likely letter" is essentially a scholarship; they just notify you of your acceptance early. Etc., etc. Plus it's just an extremely cool feeling when you get one.

How hard is it to get one of those from say Harvard?

Neither Harvard, nor any other Ivy, will send no "likely letters" in connection with EA applicants except in the case of recruited athletes who have been asked to sign a commitment letter by an athletic scholarship-granting Division 1 school.

SaxFreq's post is totally inapplicable to Harvard.

Let's just say that Likely Letters are reserved for the Kings among Men.

... or the jocks among nerds...

Hahahahahaha...that's friggin hilarious....

Way to turn my statement into sludge.

rofl

The "Neither . . . no 'likely letters'" part of what you said, Byerly, is grammatically confusing--but if you're saying that Harvard only sends EA likely letters to recruited athletes, that is only a mild correction of my first post and doesn't make anything I said "totally inapplicable" to Harvard. In the RD round, Harvard does send likely letters. I know people who recieved them, and most of them are about as athletic as dead leaves.

The double negative was due to incomplete editing.

The OP asked about "likelies" in association with the EA round, not the RD round, which is another story altogether.

"Jocks among nerds" FUNNY!
