Any ECE major get an email about MSDNAA free Microsoft stuff?

I just got an email saying Cornell ECE has enrolled me in this MSDNAA thing, and apparently I can get a bunch of Microsoft software for free, including Windows. This seems pretty nice, but I can't help thinking theres a catch. Anyone have any experience with this?

And hopefully they will have the final version of Windows 7 when it comes out in October so I don't have to go through "less legal" methods to get it...

Jokingly, you shouldn’t incriminate yourself here lol.
But yes, I got the email and it’s legit. I’m pretty sure the Windows OS is licensed for life, any other software may have a license limited by number of years. Other schools had the same thing.

(ECE '12 here) The MSDNAA program is entirely legit and is pretty awesome to try out if you have time to play with it.

Yeah I just got this in the mail too…don’t think it’s just for ECEs.

So I could install Windows 7 for free if I were to build a new computer or something? And it says something about inurringbcharges if downloading throught redrover/net. Are they referring to going over the 10Gb limit?

i heard it was just for computer related majors. is it true that you can only download each thing once?

and mingus, i’m pretty sure thats what they are referring to

MSDNAA is pretty amazing, you can get most MS products on there.

How many times you can download it or license it depends on the software. Some let you license it once (if you reformat your computer you will not get another license), some several times.

do you know if operating systems would let you license it several times?

What if you haven’t affiliate with a major yet?

I think all Engineering students got it? On paper I’m a BEE major…
There’s also a separate download center for CS students I think, ran across it when I googled “Cornell MSDNAA”.

I’m engineering and I got it. I’ll wait for windows 7 to come up on the site when its released, and hopefully it will also be free. I’m currently running the RC 7100 build, and I really don’t want to go back to vista.

Vista hogs memory like no other, 7 is a huge breath of fresh air (running RTM right now)

I thought it was for anyone who was signed up for a class in the ECE department (maybe also the upper level CS classes now, too?)

I highly doubt they would give it to every engineer.

Well, the only remotely ECE related class I have is CS 1110…and if they gave it to everyone who takes that class, it’s the same as giving it to every engineer…

"Vista hogs memory like no other, 7 is a huge breath of fresh air (running RTM right now) "

Yay, first person on the cornell forums who sounds computer savy.

I’m only running the RC now because it is at least legit until May 2010. Is there a good version of RTM you can suggest that has a good crack that will last a good while genuine?

Yeah, I’m waiting for the RTM version to be on there too. I hear that it will be up on MSDNAA this week.

Probably shouldn’t be talking about cracks on this website, but so far, none of them out right now are permanent.

Wait, Feral, but the one I used seems to be permanent as long as you don’t update…

they may force the update on you is what i’ve heard. for things involving licensing their products, microsoft can update your computer without asking you
