I just got an email saying Cornell ECE has enrolled me in this MSDNAA thing, and apparently I can get a bunch of Microsoft software for free, including Windows. This seems pretty nice, but I can't help thinking theres a catch. Anyone have any experience with this?

And hopefully they will have the final version of Windows 7 when it comes out in October so I don't have to go through "less legal" methods to get it...

Jokingly, you shouldn’t incriminate yourself here lol.
But yes, I got the email and it’s legit. I’m pretty sure the Windows OS is licensed for life, any other software may have a license limited by number of years. Other schools had the same thing.

So I could install Windows 7 for free if I were to build a new computer or something? And it says something about inurringbcharges if downloading throught redrover/net. Are they referring to going over the 10Gb limit?

MSDNAA is pretty amazing, you can get most MS products on there.

How many times you can download it or license it depends on the software. Some let you license it once (if you reformat your computer you will not get another license), some several times.

I think all Engineering students got it? On paper I’m a BEE major…
There’s also a separate download center for CS students I think, ran across it when I googled “Cornell MSDNAA”.

I’m engineering and I got it. I’ll wait for windows 7 to come up on the site when its released, and hopefully it will also be free. I’m currently running the RC 7100 build, and I really don’t want to go back to vista.

Well, the only remotely ECE related class I have is CS 1110…and if they gave it to everyone who takes that class, it’s the same as giving it to every engineer…

"Vista hogs memory like no other, 7 is a huge breath of fresh air (running RTM right now) "

Yay, first person on the cornell forums who sounds computer savy.

I’m only running the RC now because it is at least legit until May 2010. Is there a good version of RTM you can suggest that has a good crack that will last a good while genuine?

they may force the update on you is what i’ve heard. for things involving licensing their products, microsoft can update your computer without asking you
