I am planning to pursue mechanical engineering at neu and i was wondering how difficult the engineer courses are. i was accepted to bu as well, but i just recently had a talk with a friend of mine who is pursuing engineering at BU, and he is telling me that the classes are extremely difficult and probably the most difficult program in the nation and he is going bald because of the stress. this is scaring the crap out of me so much that i am reconsidering going to bu now. I am curious how is the engineering classes at neu? i know engineering is difficult in general but how is it like at neu?

Your BU friend is exaggerating. If you are considering Northeastern because you think it is easier, you will be in for a surprise.

I have a number of friends in engineering, including specifically mechanical engineering. Yes, it is difficult, and they have to put in a lot of work, but it’s not unmanageable. You are correct, it’s going to be tough anywhere, but I don’t think Northeastern trends particularly one way or the other compared to other schools. My friends spend a lot of time on their homework and such, but it doesn’t totally eat up their lives; they still have time to party and hang out be part of clubs.
The other nice thing about Northeastern is that co-op both gives you a break from the stress of all the homework (though working is a new kind of stress in its own right) and it makes your realize the importance of what you’re learning in your classes. When you see the content in action, it makes more sense and you also see the relevance. It’s not uncommon for people to boost their academics after co-op.
In short: don’t stress too much about it, especially before you even start. Be prepared to work hard, but there will be a lot of other people in the same boat as you, and I don’t know of anyone dying of engineering.

I am completely aware that engineering is very difficult. I’ve taking some engineer courses at my state college before transferring and the classes ive taken were challenging but very manageable at the same time. but I’m pretty we can all agree that the engineer program at bu is more rigorous and demanding, wouldn’t u say? The average gpa at bu is a lot lower than neu and bu constantly makes the list of schools with the hardest grades which includes other schools like mit, Princeton and rpi.

No, we cannot all agree on this. As I said before, if you are considering Northeastern only because you feel it is easier than BU, you should complete your degree as you local state college.

Do you feel like every single school has the same caliber of difficulty? Because I’m almost certain that every school is different. I’m planning to attend neu for many reasons and one of the reasons why is that I do feel it would be easier than bu. dont get me wrong, I know engineering is probably the most difficult major in every university. Anyways, Ill tell you how it goes. i may be completely wrong.

What does “easier” mean? Does BU have a reputation for grade deflation? Yes. Are the classes any harder than Northeastern? I doubt it.

I have 2 sons in engineering at NEU and they tell me that kids drop out of that major all the time. My sons are doing well though - because they work hard and because their high school prepared them extremely well. I think that is key. One son is just over 1/2 way through his civil engineering program the other just finished his 1st year.

I have heard that BU is known for grade deflation. However, and this is a big however, that does not mean that BU is harder than Northeastern - not at all. I do not know, but I would not argue that a Cornell or a MIT is harder - in my opinion that is a different level - but BU and NEU - too similar.
