My freshman year there 8 African Americans. By my senior year there were 30 or so. What we lack in ethnic diversity we make up for in economic and international diversity (afghanistan, palestine, china, france, africa etc) There was one instance of a white male calling a black female an inappropriate term my freshman year at a party but he was expelled promptly. Other than that no problems other that its Central PA and they will definitely still be a minority.

mtnday, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all of these questions about Juniata. Two things that my son found intriguing about Juniata were the traditions, and the POE idea.

One of my best friends is from PA, and she felt like it was a very racist place and said I should think long and hard before sending him there (PA, not Juniata specifically), so, I'm a little skeered! Her father was a college prof (again, not at Juniata) and still very racist. Now this was many years ago, so maybe it's gotten better. BTW, son is Hispanic, not AA. I did notice the uptick in international students, which was encouraging to me.

Youdon'tsay, that is something to really be careful about, since your son would need to live there for 4 years. I have no idea about the racism in PA, but I believe that you could find racists in every state.

mtday, I just printed out your responses, and my son is even more interested now. He wanted to just be sure that if you are not involved with sports or theatre, would you have enough to do to enjoy 4 years at Juniata?

Also, do you know where Juniata's shuttle will go if you do not have a car? Is it convenient? I heard on our tour that Juniata does run a shuttle to the new Walmart. Is that correct?

Thanks again.

yes PA is the land of good o'l boys and there is racism, but there is also sexism and republicanism. I am a religious minority which obviously is something less apparent then race but it seriously did not overshadow my expierence. My friends are the color of the rainbow and I like it that way!

I was neither involved with sports or theatre except as an fan. What is your son into northeastmom? I can help direct him to activities he might be interested in.

The shuttle to WalMart is new, since I graduated so I can't speak to that. But that being said the likelihood of your son having zero friends with cars is abysmally low, and there is always a 3 am walmart or sheetz run going on with someone on campus. Since freshman can have cars on campus at least 3-5 people on each floor if not more will have a car.

OK, does anyone think it's funny that S is considering a college where a WalMart shuttle is a draw????

j/k :)

Youdon'tsay, aint that the truth, and the local Walmart or Penn State are the local draws in that area, IMO anyway!

mtnday, I just sent a PM to you because I do not wish to discuss my son's interests publicly. He would not want that.

Re central PA: Expect to see a lot of pick-up trucks sporting NRA stickers - and during hunting season, deer carcasses as well. I was also surprised that smoking was allowed in restaurants with bars. It definitely calls for a different mindset.

On the plus side, Amtrak runs through the town with service to Philadelphia, so if your son is coming from across the country, there will be a way to get public transportation to a major airport.

Actually, my son is a deer hunter thanks to his grandfather, the card-carrying NRA member, so that could be a plus!

In fact, I thought that might make a good essay -- bleeding-heart liberal kid who also loves to hunt deer, but after the Eagle Scout thread I doubt that would be a good idea!

Youdon'tsay, I missed the Eagle Scout thread, but may have to check it out now! His essay idea sounds intriguing, and it definitely would stand out among the pack of usual topics....
