Any experience with the Miami Dade College Honors program?

I have done some research into MDC Honors and have found out that the college offers a full ride if you get admitted - and if you choose to transfer to FIU after, they will ALSO offer you a full ride there.

Now, assuming that the above facts are true... this is an offer I cannot pass up.
I believe college is an investment and if I manage to get my A.A and Bachelor's without drowning in debt then why not?

Would anyone in this site happen to have any experience with either MDC or FIU Honors and is all the work enough for to land a sustaining career?

Thanks for your input.

Well I am a current student at MDC honors and I can tell you that yes its true MDC honors offers you a full ride and also it has an agreement with the FIU honors program if you want to transfer after you are finish, but it doesn’t just offers you that it has two seminars that you can apply for one in Salzburg, Austria and the other one in Washington, all your expenses cover, and by that I mean tickets, hotels and some meals. Also the staff is amazing, professors are there to help you just like your director, I have never seen staff so committed to their students. other than paying you classes the honors college will give you $500 for books and $600 stipend and any other scholarship is awarded to you will be given in full to you since the honors college already payed for you classes. There are many other opportunities given to you in the MDC honors program, you will never imagine how many doors the honors college will open for you. Also if you decide to apply and get accepted it will get to the point where you don’y have to worry about what University you will get accepted to just which one offers you the most scholarships, I have seen students get full rides to, Harvard, Georgetown University, Standford and many others Ivy leagues universities, that’s how great this program is, but at the end the decision is yours, all that I can tell you is that you wont regret getting involve in the MDC honors program.

How do you get accepted to MD Honors? How competitive is it? I really wanna go to get a 4.0 GPA, improve my SAT scores, and then hopefully transfer to Columbia, Georgetown, or Harvard.

Is it hard to get in? What was your curriculum ?
Thank You

I’m sorry it has taken me so long to answer but I have been really busy with finals last semester and the beginning of the spring semester. BryanPaz the program is extremely competitive. For example the seminars that I mentioned above there’s only an X amount of people that would be selected, I believe for Washington DC its about 30 from the four campuses of the honors college meaning about 5-6 per campus one campus can have 100-200 students, so imagine how many applications they have to review because out of all the people that apply only 30 will be selected. For the Austria seminar is like 10 people per campus so about 40-50 people maybe less. what I want to say with this is that yes you are in an extremely competitive environment, every little thing you can do to make your portfolio and resume will be very important. It is highly important that even when you get good grades you get involve in the campus, in clubs, organization, doing service learning so you can make a better resume that will distinguish you from the others. I don’t want to scare you or anything just saying the things how they are. Also the program itself its really strict you have to keep a GPA of 3.5 during the 4 semesters that you are in the college if not you will be kicked out of the program, also remember you won’t be taking regular classes most of your classes are going to be at the honors level therefor there is going to be a higher expectation from you as a student, which means more projects, more homework and a little harder work and a lot more of the studying will depend on you, now that I said all this like I said in my previous post there is a million and more ways to get good grades professors are always glad to help you in anything they are really the best, also there is a lot of free tutoring for free so if you have issues in anything you can always go there for help. Don’t let the opportunity pass because it seems like a lot of work, and at times there might be way too much work to handle at once but it is not impossible to do, the chance that the Honor college at miami dade is giving you with this program is amazing and truth is you have a great time even with the amount of work an stress that there is, you meet amazing people that will be with you for ever and ever, the staff is amazing the director is going to become your second mom, and i don’t mean it playing, she will be literally your second mom, because if you have an issue with your schedule she is the one to go, issues with application, she is the one that will help you, asking about scholarships and internships she will also help you on that, also she is the one that knows what classes you need to get to the university you want , and of course if you have any problem school related of personal they will become you personal advisers and counselors, really they do an amazing job dealing with all of us. So what I want to say with all this yes there is a lot of work to do and it is really competitive I believe they accept only about 200-250 students a year from the i don’t know how many that apply divided into the 4 campuses, but in my opinion is more than worth it.

Now Gaby85615 It is hard to get in but if you have been involve in you high school have a good GPA and meet all the requirements I don’t see why they won’t accept you. Also take into account that even if you take many AP and dual enrollment classes that does not mean you will get in, because I’m not sure if they changed it now but it used to say in the application that excessive AP or dual enrollment credits will affect your selection but hey you don’t loose anything with applying, also it depends to which campus you plan on going and what your major will be, if your major is science related great amazing like that you advanced in many classes already and will be able to have you summers off, most of us stem-majors don’t :(. As for myself I can tell you that I graduated with a 4.2 weighted GPA and a 3.3 unweighted GPA. I had 4 AP courses, 78 community service hours and an ACT score of 28. Right now I have a 4.00 GPA as off the the fall semester 2012 I have 6 classes a semester minimum which is about 17 credits; and I’m always taking summer. I can’t really tell you much more because I don’t know what major you are going to pursue but if you need to know anything else just let me know.

“and then hopefully transfer to Columbia, Georgetown, or Harvard.”
that one really cracked me up…

@jamesbond1 What’s wrong with you? If they want to apply to those schools, they can. Grads of Miami Dade have gone on to Georgetown and schools like it. Stop being such a dick.

I’ll tell you my experience with MDC-Honors Program(Prior to becoming the Honors College). It was a fun experience. The classes requires that you write a documented research paper, which really prepares you for the 4-year university. The classes are usually small. However, I took a leave of absence in 2001 due to personal financial pressures. When I returned, I was told that I couldn’t register for Honors classes because the program had changed to the Honors College which only takes High School graduates, which was unfortunate. I do not know of any college that denies a student the opportunity to take Honors class if his grades are above a 3.5 GPA. In addition, I previously took a total of 6 Honors level classes during my Freshman year. Where it not for my deteriorating financial situation, I would have completed a total of nine Honors classes prior to graduating in 2002. But things don’t always turn out the way you plan them.
