Any first years?

Hey all,

I wanted to take some time to encourage any first years to take freshman seminar classes. I took one last year and it was really fascinating. Each department offers small 1-unit discussion classes where you talk about a subject of interest to the professor.

I'm looking under the Ethnic Studies classes, and one of the seminars is taught by David Pellow, a very respected professor amongst progressive people at UCSD. The class is called FR87: Social Justice Movements. If you go to WebReg and go to Ethnic Studies, you should be able to find it. Its only one day a week, and you just talk with the professor. David Pellow is a really fascinating man, I think you'll learn a lot from this or any other seminar! Another seminar under the ethnic studies department is "FR87: Asians, The Model Minority?" which talks about the racialization of asian people in America, especially asian students. She'll probably talk about the myth of the "smart asian" or the "privileged asian." The model minority myth goes really deep, I think you could learn a lot from the class.

Take advantage of freshman seminars while you still can. =o)

agreed. i took CHEM 87 (stargazing) my freshman year and had a total blast, the best of which was a field trip to the palomar observatory where we got to build a snowman in the middle of april. :)

Interesting that I just posted about the seminars, here is a UCTV documentary that features Professor Pellow talking about a seminar he held recently. It goes into the history of social justice activism on campus. It's really cool!
