Any Gates Millennium Scholarship applicants!?

Hey I was just wondering if anyone else was applying to this. Is there anyone out there who has applied in the past? If so, I'd love to hear from you!

I had a question about it. I was wondering if you had to show significant financial need to even by considered for the award. I heard that somewhere, but wasn't sure. I'm not sure if my family qualifies as such...but I'm planning to attend an Ivy, and will definitely need the financial help. I hope this doesn't come across as snobby. :)

hi i applied for GMSP. when will we hear back from them? i know after jan. 14

yeah do we need to demonstrate real need, I assume not since I've seen beethoven post that he is not financially strapped...

Eligibility: Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:
Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American,
Are a citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the United States,
Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.00 scale (unweighted) at the time of nomination,
Will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as full-time, degree seeking freshmen in the Fall of 2005,
Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, and
Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

...I'm assuming that to "meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria", you have to demonstrate financial need.

Does anyone know how much money is given out and to whom it is given? What are some of your stats?

if you win the GATES Millenium Scholarship then all your tuition is paid for. yep thats right paid for.

jaw drops is that for all four undergrad years!? i'd better beef up my essays!

sorry. i need to clarify.

the amount is based on need. and if you qualify for a Pell Grant then you are in a low incoming earning bracket and that in turn translates into high financial aid. so the logical is very linear. if you qual for a pell grant then you have a high need for fin aid (the higher the scholar award is).

Who May Apply(specifically)
Undergraduate and vocational students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in participating schools.
Type of Assistance(specifically)
Federal Pell Grants are direct grants awarded through participating institutions to students with financial need who have not received their first bachelor's degree or who are enrolled in certain postbaccalaureate programs that lead to teacher certification or licensure. Participating institutions either credit the Federal Pell Grant funds to the student's school account, pay the student directly (usually by check) or combine these methods. Students must be paid at least once per term (semester, trimester, or quarter); schools that do not use formally defined terms must pay the student at least twice per academic year.

when was/is the deadline?

so first one must demonstrate pell grant need.- I still have no idea how to do this. We haven't filled FAFSA yet/ Do all 1000 winners receive full tuition? It doesn't say on the website.

bumpbumpbump

<the amount="" is="" based="" on="" need.=""> (see my above post)</the>

that amount varies depending on your financial situation

oh yes, but how do I know whether I qualify for a Pell Grant or not?

fill out the FAFSA ASAP after 01/01/05 to determine EFC (expected family contribution)/how much money will be taken off of your award

hi mitch:) Are you applying this also? If so, good luck.

basically, if you know you dont have enough "financial need" to get a grant, then dont bother applying.

ecner....yeah...i'm taking my chances and applying for GMSP...I really really really REALLY need the money for college.....dont wanna end up at ASU just because of the full scholarship offer

is it really competitive...cause i haven't done incredible things- like go to bosnia to help people, or build houses for the homeless...i am just another ordinary person.

then again, there are 1000 awards....

What if you attend a school that meets "100 percent of your need"? Does that mean you do not get any of the scholarship, even if the school offers you loans?
