Any good reasons to join PEERS???

So far I hear it sux and is a waste of time. Any honest positive experiences?

bump , haha i guess not very many positive experiences to share… btw i want to go to med school one day, and i’d like 4 yrs of research in undergrad, any advice there?

From the topics I’ve seen that involved questions about PEERS, it seems nothing good at all comes out of it. I’m really considering dropping it as well. There was perhaps one person who said his friend found it useful, out of the many others who discourage us to take this program.

Does dropping it affect your college transcript in any way?

Does participating in this program truly aid in getting to prestigious graduate schools, like the PEERS coordinator said it would?

lol they told us regents scholars that there would be a huge network of support and that we could do whatever the hell we wanted while at UCLA.

dont think so.

LOL zzzboy

are there any mandatory obligations for PEERS?

getting into a prestigious graduate school is based on what you do. peers will probably help people who know nothing about the process be informed, but really the onus is on yourself

Yes, there are mandatory obligations. You’re going to have to take supplemental 1.0 unit classes that correspond with the subject material (i.e. separate 1.0 unit seminars for Chem 20A, Math 31A, Math 3A, etc).

It benefits low-income students who came from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as racial minorities. It’s a retention program for these students, particularly in the math and science related fields and it is associated with AAP (look it up).

If you need additional help and would like support that’s more personal than that found through Covel Commons, then it would benefit you. I would say, try it out and if it doesn’t work, there are no penalties for leaving the program. Entirely up to you.

Do they only have workshops for certain math and science classes? Because I would be starting of at Math 32A as a math major and the only science class I need is Physics 1A.

PEERS guarantees you help to secure you in a research lab 2nd yr. WORTH THE CRAPPY FIRST YEAR =]

im a freshman right now and overall i think its ok.

it adds 7 hours to your workload but no homework really

the workshops are good practice in my opinion although they can be annoying at times

EDIT:

oh and you get priority enrollment into your science and math classes
they give you like a first pass for the major classes but you can use it to get into a lab instead
