Any great admission stories of high gpa, great ec's but not super high sat's?

Oh, I forgot to mention that some of the students are really rich/celebrities (alison eastwood, clint's daughter), so some may be development cases. For example, my friend (not the one in the list) has a scholarship named after him for Stanford, though he is smart enough anyway .

Also, some students have CRAZY ECs, as in we have a couple musicians that are actually fairly big in the indie scene (ex. MC Lars, the guy that sings i-generation and download this song), three girl golf players (out of a class of 125ish coed) that got recruited to Stanford, Princeton, and some other top school (duke? forgot, could be the 1570).

I'm not bragging or anything, just reminding people to take these stats with a grain of salt. If you see someone with a low GPA AND a low SAT score, it is safe to assume that they have some kind of hook.

I would also add that how impressive your GPA depends mainly on the classes you took and the high school you went to. If you took challenging classes at a challenging high school, the adcoms are much more likely to forgive you any low test scores.

In case you want to view more stats, take a look at CC's stats profiles or any number of websites that do these. Though if you are upper middle class, Asian or white, and have educated parents, then my school might be pretty accurate (lol, we are pretty homogenous). Here's a link for any that are interested in previous years.

@Poseur: Nobody really minds too much because 1st, it gets posted after they graduate, 2nd, because it is somewhat anonymous (basically everyone in the middle gets accepted into UCs), and 3rd, our school is fairly relaxed and not too competitive. In fact, I think many private schools post these kind of rankings. And yes, having nearly perfect scores in CR and Math but utterly failing the Writing would be an interesting approach to the SATs. We actually had someone that got CR 800, Math 530 (or something like that), and Writing 780 a few years back.

Is it a popular misconception that ur SAT's need to be high? In the PDF, all but one had < 2200 but still got into great schools (many of them in fact being under 2000).

Disclaimer: If you didn't notice, I go to the school detailed in the pdf.

This is just my observation, but I think it depends on the rigor of your high school. The pdf is of a very rigorous private boarding school (not andover, but imho within top 50 or at the very least top 100 in us). Colleges know that students actually have learned the material and are more willing to overlook a lower SAT. Now, compare this to a school with known grade inflation, and SAT scores need to be relied upon.

Furthermore, I think CC's definition of a great school is like Harvard, so that might be what the fixation on the SAT is all about.

*** PBailey those acceptances are ridiculous...lol

Had a kid -salutatorian- from my school with 2330 get rejected from Princeton and ended up going to Harvard
Kid with 2360 got rejected from UChicago and ended up going to Trinity
Two kids off to Cornell, valedictorian and 4th in class each with 2150+ SAT's
Kid that was third in class ended up in Barnard (Columbia) with 2200ish SAT

This is a class of 730ish, everyone else didn't go anywhere good or didn't go to college.

Your list shows pretty much everyone with low weighted GPA's and average SAT scores. They must have all been out building 30-page extracurricular resumes....lol

I got into Columbia, Georgetown, LSE with a 1800 SAT but GPA of 4.0 since 7th grade.

"Um...is it odd that only one got into Stanford, or that he only got into Stanford. As I noted, that means he got accepted early."

You must have posted after I opened up the page but before I wrote my answer :)

Actually, ECs are not terribly impressive. Everyone is required to play a sport after school and that occupies our time from 3:30 to dinner, then after dinner, we hang out with friends, then begin study hall. After study hall, we then hang out with friends again and then we have to be in our rooms. The only time for ECs is the weekends, and most boarders don't have cars/too young to drive...

And the GPAs aren't low. My school weights honors/and APs as +.3
Like this:
A: 4.0 or 4.3
A-:3.7 or 4.0
etc.

yeah, but she was Native-American, first-generation, and low-income. come to think of it, her gpa was only decent, ecs not bad, and SAT 1900. she got into columbia....

Not to be snarky, but it appears that some people at your school need to be better informed about U.S. geography. Wisconsin is not the same as Michigan. ;)

The SAT helps colleges gauge how difficult your school is (thus, how hard-earned your GPA was). While they only use it generally (2300 vs. 2400 is negligable), your SAT will almost certainly keep you out of the tippy-top tier of schools. You can always try the ACT though!
