Any GS applicants have any news?

Has anyone else heard from admissions for Early Decision?

We're going on 7 weeks here...I'm wondering if this is a bad sign?

I haven't been called for an interview either.

Merlin83, I haven't heard anything either. But I did not apply for Early Decision. I submitted in my application late (on March 19).

Does anyone know how long it takes for a recommendation to get to the admission office?

My teacher told me that he sent off a recommendation on March 21. The mail is coming from CA. I contacted the admission office and they keep telling me that they have never received any recommendation.

i was accepted a few weeks ago. now the difficult question: is it worth it?

also accepted to ucsb and umich. umich oos is almost as much as columbia, so it's really ucsb or columbia...

columbia pros: smart classmates, mature student population, diversity, in superurban megalopolis, 3-2 dual degree engineering with liberal arts core, far from where i'm from so it still feels like i'm exploring, significant lgbt population

columbia cons: large loan payments, might be some snide attitudes around, expense could cheapen the whole experience

ucsb pros: dirt cheap, on the beach, academically sound program (probably not a whole lot different, some textbooks are the same between both schools)

ucsb cons: mostly 18-22 yr old bros and hoes who are there to party in isla vista, not much of a mature student population, smallish city without much culture, about an hour from my hometown, doesn't have much of a lgbt population

Congraduations, a-dub.

I think that it depends on what you want to do after graduation. For instance, if you want to get into one of those i-banking or consulting jobs on the wall street or plan on going to top graduate or MBA schools, I think that Columbia education is definitely worth it.

a-dub, could you please share your stats? Thanks.

I, too, have been weighing the costs as well. I am also a CA resident and have the opportunity to go to some amazing schools for next to nothing. The thought of the possibility of having 100k in loans at the end of my undergrad education is keeping me from making the final commitment. Of course, many don't have the benefit if a stellar publics-school system, so GS will hold a higher value.

Columbia may be a better experience as a grad student and I plan on getting an MBA directly after undergrad, so that may end up being the plan. Part of the reason for wanting to go to GS was the opportunity to enter the GS/MBA dual degree program with CBS. However, I talked to a counselor and she said that the program is VERY selective and you need to meet a host of requirements to even be considered. Good plan, but hard to justify the expense based on the possibility.

Congrats, a-dub. UCSB is a good education for the money (any UC is). If you intend on going to grad school, you won't have much difficulty going to a great school, such as Columbia.

a-dub,

congrats!
sounds like you have a tough decision to make in terms of where to go...

when did you submit your application?

I called admissions yesterday and they said just wait until May 1 (like I have any choice in the matter)...i got the impression that she (GS admissions person) had been fielding calls like mine all day long...she was a bit short with me...not that I probably wouldn't be the same way...

anyway, good luck to everyone! Hopefully next year we'll be fellow GS students!!!

submitted app 2/5 and got a postcard a few weeks later informing me that there were missing bits to my application. submitted the missing bits within a week and got fedex on march 21.
