ANY guesses? I Do chance back, really I do.

So what are my chances? On a scale of 1-12, with 12 being the strongest, would I stand a good chance at Penn and Stanford? These are very basic stats. List other schools you think I may be a good candidate for.
SAT I: 2230
SAT II:
Bio, 740
Physics, 720, 750
Chem, 800
Math 2C, 800
GPA: 95.9
APs, including senior year, 6
Chem-5, USH-5
EC: Intel, Campaign Volunteering, Hospital Gift Shop, club founder (this last is very very very recent and I am rising senior)
Awards: PSAT (227, perhaps semifinals), placed 2nd at a National Science Consortium, Poetry Publication in Anthology

hmm mind if you give the breakdown of your SAT I?
If you broke 700 on every section I’d say you have a 7/8 chance of making Penn or stanford, but its really difficult to give an accurate guess for these top tier schools.
Try to build on your EC’s more as well, a bit more leadership positions would help, although doing Intel and NSC looks really good.

What do you intend on majoring? That would help in listing other schools.
oh yeah it would help you to get better chance guesses if you give info. about your secondary school rigor and grades, cause all of that’s important too.

i think you have a decent shot at both schools. i dont know much about admissions so i wont give you a rating. but it seems to me you have good ecs and standardized test scores. but maybe you have to take more ap classes, is your courseload considered rigorous at your school? if you write good essays and get good recs, you have a good shot. but remember these schools are hard to get into.

I would give you a 7, although it is impossible to say so for schools like stanford and penn.
As already said you should get some more outstanding EC’s.

Chance Back?

Not sure about Penn and Stanford, but I do believe you have 100% chances at Brown and Yale. ;)

Either a bad attempt at humor or a really misinformed poster.

OP: it will be tough. The only real accomplishment that distinguishes you from a lot of other people is Intel, and even so many have that accomplishment with better stats (yours are average for the schools you want).

Jamesford, when you say average, what grades are you referring to? AP, SAT I, SAT II, GPA?

The GPA can’t be judged harshly in the context of my school (not a small school and consistently ranks high with the largest number of noble prize winners produced by any high school) – my GPA is in the top 2-5%.
The best to judge are SAT and AP.

I will be very, very honest here.

Your SATII scores and GPA are solid, but I must say that in the most selective institutions, many of the applicants will have have similar statistics and numbers. How do admissions officers decide between the hoards of numbers? They look at the ECs.

Intel (at what level?) and publishing Poetry anthology are quite impressive, but commonly found in other applications, and almost everyone does hospital volunteer work. Therefore, your ECs are fair, but not astounding.

But what you lack is a leadership position.

Here’s a suggestion. If you do like science, (which you do, judging by your ECs and SATII scores) why not found a Science Club or a Science Olympiad team at your school?

And just in case, I would retake the SATs and try to break a 2300+, if you have time, that is.

Sorry if I sound like a downer, but this really is my best piece of advice for you.

SAT I. It falls within the middle 50% of the classes at UPenn and Stanford, but it would help a lot if you could get it closer to (or above) the 75th percentile.

It’s the former, but perhaps you missed what was so terribly humorous about it. :)

Don’t worry, monstor344, I got the joke. You are funny.

Let’s say I do work on my SAT. Now should I do the ACT or is it possible to get in without an ACT grade? Quite frankly, I think the SAT is a better test than the SAT and I’ve seen that of the students who take either/or, SAT is usually preferred. But that was a few years ago. I don’t know about these days.

For ACT, what is the latest day to test (October or December) for a rising senior?

Update on Intel—trying to figure out a way to break tumor growth partially based on molecular markers (if that’s what you meant by level, sasunimono)

What’s Intel. Isn’t it a company thats make computer processors.

No, Intel is also the name of a science competition. It’s ok, pm89, I would have thought the same before the start of grade 10 when I actually started working on it.

i would give u a 7/8 for Penn and Stanford. most of the other applicants will have similar scores so it all boils down to letter of recommendations and the application essay.

chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/747378-chance-me-ill-chance-u-back.html

I think that you are at least a good applicant at both schools, so best of luck to you! I think that SAT IIs are solid, a tad low SAT I, but nothing to fret about. I would adivse you to retake only if you believe you can go significantly higher (like 2300+), but it’s not necessary. You don’t exactly have awesome ECs, lacking some solid leadership positions. I think that Intel is great for your app, but how well did you do? That could be a nice plus for your app, that’s for sure! Your pretty good right now, but with some tweaking, you will be better! Good luck! :)

@jamesoford: It’s a good joke my friend, as in the real (actress) Emma Watson had her pick between Brown and Yale; that’s what that comment was alluding to. If you check out the Yale page, you’ll see a thread with many many responses on this topic.
