has anyone won the harvard book award and applied?

I did not receive this :(.

Neither did I. I actually didn't get ANY book awards... I just got a Spanish department award.
Which was fine with me :)

Are there any special advantages of having a book award from Harvard when applying to Harvard?

There is no special advantage when applying. The book award is Harvard's way of promoting Harvard and encouraging promising applicants to apply.

I got it. I made sure to put it on my resume when I applied to Harvard :D

I DID 10 char

i got one. it does not help your chances in any way, though. it's just the alumns' way of promoting school spirit through a collection of pre-1950 essays =)

i got one too.it's about harvard in the twentieth century. i was just curious lol

Do homeschoolers even have a chance at a Harvard book award? Aren't the book awards usually given out by local alumni groups through local schools, so that a student not affiliated with a school doesn't get included in the selection process?

Most stellar students in the country -- homeschooled or not -- have no chance to get the Harvard book award since the alumni clubs fund it, decide whether to offer it and decide what schools will get it. At most schools, no Harvard book award is offered. If the book award is offered, it's the GC or someone else at the school who determines who gets it.

Again: It's simply nice PR for Harvard. It is not a factor in admissions.

yea i got it. going to wharton but i would like to confirm that it does nothing. at least at my school, ive noticed that if you get the award from a prestigious school, it does make you look more attractive to competitive colleges

What I'm really sad to hear is that the Harvard Book Prize is no longer the outline of world history that I got when I was in high school. No reference book in my house got consulted more often, especially in the pre-Wikipedia era. It's a great one-volume guide to stuff like who was on whose side in the War of Spanish Succession, and what was happening in Japan and Africa while that was going on in Europe.

Whoaaaaaaaa I really want that outline of world history... I'm a geography fanatic and that sounds AWESOME.

i got it. it's basically a book praising harvard to the greatest extent or something like that. ..i wanted something a bit more pragmatic. it's literally called "THE HARVARD BOOK" it's pretty on the bookshelf though. it doesn't help you in admissions or anything like that.

hey millhouse! fellow quaker and harvard book winner.
