Any Help Is Welcomed

Hi, I currently have a 3.38 gpa with two semesters to raise it. When I transfer, I will have an Associate’s in Graphic Design, so I’m hoping that I can use a lot of the basic classes for transferring.
1. I heard NYU doesn’t allow some credits to transfer, which ones are likely to get held back? (If anyone has a link to the page that says which credits are transferable because I couldn’t find it).

I was in a lot of clubs in high school and into volunteering but kind of start to slack of this year, but I plan on getting back into it this semester. I heard that they don’t want to see a lot of volunteering but more so that you committed to something.
2. So how many should I do? I plan on doing an internship in the summer for TOMS under the graphics dept; will that help me stand out more?

I read on the site that you need a foreign language. I was going to do sign language; does that count as the foreign language?

I’m a vegan and really want to stay in Hayden or Weinstein since they’re suppose to be the top vegan dorms. I heard that Weinstein is kind of a suck-ish dorm but haven’t heard anything about Hayden except the food is kind of crap..?
4. Does anyone know anything about those two? And do any of the upperclassman dorms have vegan options?

Should I transfer next fall or 2013 Spring? If I transfer in the fall, should I wait till after early decision to get my gpa up or will the early decision give me some lee-way? Is it less competitive in the Spring and would I get a crappy dorm if I wait until then?

I want to submit pictures as my portfolio, does anyone have experience with this? (sample portfolios are welcomed!)

Does anyone longboard around campus? I know some my professors get upset when I bring my board into class, any comments on this?

I know this is a lot of questions but I’m kinda freaking out because I feel like I can’t really find anything helpful on their site and the most valuable information I find is up here. Thanks to anyone who helps me out! Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

As a new transfer student, I’ll try to answer some of your questions, although my experience is probably different than yours; I transferred to Tisch for film. I’m not sure what school / program you’re trying to transfer into.

NYU, or at least Tisch film, allows you to transfer a max of 56 credits. They counted 56 of mine, since I transferred from a four year college, but my friend who transferred from a community college had some issues with them not counting credits, which I assume is what you’re doing.

I think you kind of answered your own question.

By foreign language do they mean in high school or college? I never took a language in college.

Hayden and Weinstein are freshman dorms, which you can’t live in as an upperclassman. The upperclassman dorms have kitchens rather than dining halls, although you can eat at any of the dining halls if you’re on a meal plan.

I didn’t know you could transfer in the spring, although again it may just be for Tisch film.

I skateboard to class and I haven’t had any issues.

Hope this helps. I know there’s definitely a lack of information about transferring out there.

Thanks for the reply.

The foreign language was for NYU. It said you had to take two consecutive years of one language and if you transfer and only took one year, you have to take a 2nd year at NYU.

I didn’t know if I would be considered a Freshman or not because I’m not really transferring my degree and I’m imagining the worst and thinking very few of my credits who transfer.

And I think you can transfer in the Spring. I just read somewhere on here that it is indeed better to transfer in the Spring because it’s less competitive but it was an old thread.

Can you tell me of your transferring experience? Like what was your gpa and ECs.

Thanks!

You will be considered a transfer student and will not have the option of freshman housing. Upper classman dorms all have kitchens. Dining halls are not in most upperclass dorms.

Sign language fits the language requirement at NYU.

It seems like you still need to do a lot of research into NYU. What program are you interested in? Do they accept many transfers into the program? If a program has a portfolio requirement, it will be on the NYU website for the department and you need to follow their exact guidelines. If there isn’t a portfolio requirement, then NYU will not look at an artwork as a supplement.

Good luck.

Hey,

I just PMed you.

For the boarding question … there’s a lot of kids who skate here. The Village is a very young area in general and it’s not uncommon at all to see someone skating or longboarding through the streets around NYU. I’ve seen kids walk into classrooms and tuck their board under or behind their seat and it’s not a problem. Trust me, when you see how some of these kids dress/pierce/color/style, a longboard is nothing shocking to a professor.

Thanks a lot for everyones help; I totally forgot to put I was applying to Tisch film. If anyone has any experiences or opinions to offer up, I would appreciate it!
